The History of Adventureland

A large African Elephant (animatronic) looms on the banks of Disneyland's Jungle Cruise attraction located in Adventureland

Adventureland is one of the original lands at Disneyland Park, opening with the park on July 17, 1955. Adventureland was designed to be a land of adventure, inspired by the stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Rudyard Kipling, and countless others. It is a tropical-themed land that offers guests an immersive experience with rides, attractions, and dining options that transport visitors to exotic destinations.

The land has undergone many changes since its opening, but it still retains its original spirit of adventure. In 1959, the Swiss Family Treehouse was added, inspired by the film Swiss Family Robinson. The Enchanted Tiki Room was added, in 1963, followed by the Jungle Cruise in 1967. Then in 1973, Adventureland was expanded with the addition of the Walt Disney‘s Enchanted Tiki Room and the Jungle Cruise. Finally, in 1974, the Indiana Jones Adventure was added, and in 1999, the Tarzan’s Treehouse was added. In 2001, Adventureland was expanded again with the addition of the Aladdin’s Oasis.

What to See and Do in Adventureland

Adventureland is home to a variety of attractions, ranging from thrilling rides to more leisurely experiences. Here are some of the most popular:

The Jungle Cruise

A large outdoor patio greets would be passengers aboard the Jungle Cruise attraction in Disneyland.

The Jungle Cruise is a classic Disneyland attraction and a must-see for any Adventureland visitor. Board a boat and take a tour through the jungle, complete with animatronic animals and punny jokes from your tour guide. It is a unique attraction that is sure to make you laugh and awe at the same time.

Indiana Jones Adventure

In the depth of Indiana Jones' adventures we find an archeologists office, filled with troves of historical treasures. Disneyland, Adventureland, Indiana Jones Adventure

The Indiana Jones Adventure is one of the most popular rides in Adventureland, and for good reason. This high-speed adventure takes you through the Temple of the Forbidden Eye, complete with fire, snakes, and a giant rolling boulder. You’ll feel like you’re Indiana Jones himself! And don’t forget to grab a FastPass for this ride, as the lines can get long.

The Adventureland Treehouse (NEW)

A pastel colored print brings to life the vision of Adventureland's newest attraction, The Adventureland Treehouse. Only at Disneyland Resort in California.

Looking for a more leisurely adventure? Take a stroll through The Adventure Land Treehouse. This attraction allows you to explore a jungle home and get a bird’s-eye view of Adventureland. You can also catch a glimpse of other attractions around the park from up high. This attraction is great for all ages and is a nice break from the fast-paced adventure rides.

The Enchanted Tiki Room

Take a break from the heat and enjoy the air conditioning in the Enchanted Tiki Room. This attraction features animatronic birds singing classic Disney tunes. It’s a great way to relax and take a break from the excitement of the park. The show is fun for all ages and provides a nice, cool respite from the hot California sun.

After all those thrills, you’ll be ready to have a bite – and a break! Check out the three fantastic dining options in Adventureland. One of which is home to my absolute favorite Disney snack!

Tiki Juice Bar

The original home of the original Dole Whip. Located just outside the entrance to the Enchanted Tiki Room this eatery is exclusively mobile order.

Pro Tip: mobile order your whip (or grab and go at Tropical Hideaway nearby) and bring it along for the Enchanted Tiki Room show!

Tropical Hideaway

The entrance to Tropical Hideaway features an intricately carved sign and water feature.

When you’re ready for a sweet and unique treat, Tropical Hideaway is where you’ll want to be. Here you’ll find a collection of Dole Whip flavors and creations – including my all type favorite Mango Chile Whip. You can also grab steamed bao buns with meat or veggies. Seating is available with many tables and chairs, and some free entertainment from Rosita the barker bird.

Bengal Barbeque

This quick stop across from the Indiana Jones Adventure is a great option for a growling stomach. With a selection of fire grilled kebabs, you can take your pick of beef, chicken, and veggies.

Pro Tip: DIY a Disneyland secret menu delicacy by first grabbing the Cheesy Garlic Bread from Edelweiss snacks (near Matterhorn) and creating a sandwich. D’lish!
