5 Best Underrated Attractions at Animal Kingdom

Disney World’s Animal Kingdom tends to be seen as a glorified zoo or is hyped as a thrilling amusement park in opposition of this view. But why not both? Animal Kingdom is better than a zoo and more than an amusement park, because it’s both!

It’s the only Disney park where you can catch lions lounging in the sun, and take a stomach dropping ride through the Yeti infested Everest Mountain.

it’s easy to get caught up in all that excitement, and there are plenty of attractions to fulfill your need for thrills. Unfortunately, guests tend to be blinded by these and miss out on some of the best underrated attractions. Sure, they may not make your belly do flips but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth the wait.

Plus – there usually isn’t any wait at all! Yup, you can almost always walk straight onto these underrated attractions at the Animal Kingdom. Which makes them a great way to fill in time between FastPasses or waiting for a dining reservation. Here they are, our Top 5 Best Underrated Attractions at Animal Kingdom

Affection Section / Conservation Station

The Affection Section and Conservation Station are parts of Rafiki’s Planet Watch, which you have probably never stumbled on. In fact, unless you are seeking this one out – you’re not going to find it. That’s because you have to take the Wildlife Express Train to get there.

Once you arrive you’ll take a short walk into the Conservation Station where you can learn about lots of different creatures. You can view invertebrates and sometimes even pet a reptile! Exiting the opposite side of the building, you’ll find the Afffection Section. A petting zoo inside Disney that you never knew existed. And yes, the animals are more magical simply because they’re in Disney.

It’s Tough to be a Bug

It’s Tough to Be a Bug is an animatronic telling of the movie sharing the same name. While it is similar to it’s California Adventure counterpart, there are a few differences. Namely, this is live-action whereas DCA’s It’s Tough to Be a Bug presented guests with a film. However, it’s still filled with special 4D effects to make you feel as though you’ve shrunk down to bug size.

The attraction is housed in a large theater air conditioned theater. Which means there is always room to take a break from the Florida heat and catch the show!

Maharajah Jungle Trek/ Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

The Maharajah Jungle Trek and Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail are 2 walking animal exhibits. The walks are well shaded, but I still wouldn’t recommend this too late in the day. But I  do recommend adding these to your schedule, especially if you’ve visited the park before.

Yes, it’s basically a zoo exhibit. But Disney does everything better, even zoos. So, you can expect to see spectacular habitats with a touch of Pixie Dust. You can even get up close and personal hanging out with some new friends in the open air bat section.

Primeval Whirl

Primeval Whirl gets such a bad rap! This  crazy mouse style coaster takes you for a spin around Dinoland U.S.A. high above the ground. It’s notorious for it’s fast turns that whip you around the curvy track – it is a crazy mouse coaster after all, that’s kind of the point. Guests are divided on this one, they either love it or hate. One thing is for certain, it’s going to be a bit of a rough ride.

Wildlife Express Train

The Wildlife Express Train is your round-trip ticket to Rafiki’s Planet Watch. I love it, because it’s reminiscent of Disney railroads in Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom. The train is a fun way to take a spin around the park, catch a glimpse of wildlife you wouldn’t otherwise see, and take a break from walking around in the heat.
