Flight of Passage is a groundbreaking attraction that debuted in Pandora – The World of Avatar on May 27, 2017. Inspired by James Cameron’s blockbuster film. This thrilling ride allows guests to soar on the back of a banshee over the breathtaking landscapes of Pandora.

The journey begins in the queue, where visitors are immersed in the lush environment of the Valley of Mo’ara and guided through the scientific facilities of the Pandora Conservation Initiative. Here, guests learn about the symbiotic relationship between the Na’vi and the mountain banshees, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience.

The attraction itself is a marvel of modern theme park engineering, combining cutting-edge technology with immersive storytelling. Riders are linked to their own Avatar and seated on individual ride vehicles designed to simulate the flight of a banshee.

As the ride begins, guests are launched into a stunning 3D world, complete with exhilarating dips, swoops, and breathtaking vistas.

Rider Requirements

Guests must meet certain rider requirements to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for everyone. First and foremost, there is a height requirement of 44 inches (112 cm).

You’ll also be wearing 3D glasses for this experience with sudden drops, sharp turns, and intense visual and sensory effects. Individuals with motion sickness, fear of heights, or certain medical conditions such as heart, back, or neck problems should carefully consider whether this attraction is suitable for them.

How to Ride

Avatar Flights of Passage is insanely popular, with average wait times around 90 minutes to two hours. It’s good, but it’s not that good. There’s far too much to do in Animal Kingdom to be stuck standing around waiting for two hours.

Rope Dropping Flights of Passage

Animal Kingdom opens at 8:00am, most days, to standard daytime guests. Which means guests staying on property can enter as earlier as 7:30am.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many places for the rope drop crowds to go once inside the park. Kilimanjaro Safari‘s does not open early for hotel guests – and sometimes opens later than the park. And Expedition Everest is in the back of the park, with a Single Rider line.

Most guests are headed directly for Pandora, and Flights of Passage. Despite the early morning mad dash, rope dropping this Avatar adventure is still a good bet for guest staying on property. Plan to arrive at the park at least 30 minutes early (7:00am for on property guests).

Be prepared to wait 30-45 minutes – still better than 2 hours. If you aren’t staying at Disney World resort, rope dropping will still help shorten your wait time. But be prepared to wait upwards of an hour, even if you are the first guest through the gate at 8:00am.

Late Night

Don’t worry if you’re more of a night owl, as park closing is the second best time to ride Flight of passage. That’s because if you enter a queue at Disney before the park closes, they will let you wait to ride as long as it takes.

Sadly, the wait still tends to hover around 90 minutes even at the very end of the night. But at least you’re not missing out on other attractions around the park. And it’s usually much cooler.

TIPS: Grab a snack or drink from Pongu Pongu to make the wait a bit more barrable. 

Lightening Lane Status

The fact that Avatar Flight of Passage still pulls a consistent wait time nearing 2 hours, more than 7 years after opening is a testament to this timeless adventure. It’s a must-do attraction for many park guests and we agree!

So, if you’re not interested in rushing around to experience it there is another option: Lightening Lane. Disney‘s newest Skip the Line Service allows you to pay a single price to bypass the standby line, and basically walk on to this attraction.

Historically we’ve seen the price range between $11 and $16 per person, per day, for Avatar Flight of Passage. And for the most part, the Lightening Lane Single Pass is available all day. But this could change drastically with the upcoming changes.

If this is the ride that is going to make or break your trip – buy the Lightening Lane Single Pass as soon as you can. That’s 7 days before arrival if you’ll be staying at a Disney World resort, and 3 days before your visit to the parks if not.

The Ride Experience

TRON Lightcycle Run is not for the faint-hearted. The ride begins with guests boarding a motorcycle-style ride vehicle, called a lightcycle. The forward positioning of the cycles, with no seatbelt and only two locking pieces securing riders, adds to the terrifying thrill.

The track for TRON is pretty standard, filled with sharp turns and daunting drops. It’s comparable to the layout for Space Mountain or Cosmic Rewind. But the light cycles add an unexpected component of intensity.

Technical Specifications

Designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and manufactured by Vekoma, TRON Lightcycle Run is a motorbike roller coaster that offers the following technical specifications:

Accessibility and Rider Requirements

Due to the attraction’s intensity and unusual ride vehicles, guests under 48″ are not permitted. Disney hasn’t offered any public statement about the maximum size, height, or weight of guests but your milage may very. Riders must lay forward with their legs back and calves locked into place, those with wider lower legs may have difficulty with the attraction’s safety mechanism.

Walking through the queue you’ll find a replica of the Lightcycle vehicles where you can test and ensure it’s able to accommodate you. Don’t worry if it’s not! Each train features a standard rollercoaster cart at the end the rest of us.

How to Experience the Ride

Getting on TRON Lightcycle Run can be a rough experience, given that there is no standby queue. The ride is accessible only through Virtual Queue or Individual Lightening Lane.

Virtual Queue

Disney rolled out the virtual queue system back when Rise of the Resistance first opened and has used it for the launch of nearly every major attraction since. The virtual queue opens twice per day, at 7:00 am for morning availability and 1:00 pm for afternoon and evening availability. And these reservations go quick. If you’re planning to secure a place in the virtual queue, make sure that you are logged into the Disney World app and navigate to the attraction at least 10 minutes before the opening time. For the afternoon drop, at 1:00 pm, you must be inside Magic Kingdom.

Pixie Pointer: Make sure everyone’s account in your party are linked together before the day of your visit. That way you can have a few different people try for reservations, increasing your chances.

Guests staying at a Deluxe, or otherwise qualifying resort, will have a thrid chance at 6:00 pm to secure a spot in the virtual queue on select nights. You’ll need to have both your resort reservation and park ticket linked to your myDisney account, and be in the park at 6:00 pm when the queue re-opens.

Lightening Lane Access

TRON LightCycle Run is not available through Genie+, but you are able to purchase an Individual Lightening Lane reservation. The price varies but starts as low as $18 per person. In our experience Lightening Lane reservations are available throughout most of the day, starting to sell out around mid-afternoon. You will not be able to choose or alter your return time.

Top Tips for Riding TRON: LightCycle Run

The virtual queue for TRON fills up within a minute, most of the time. You’ll need to have a steady hand and fast wi-fi to snag this one. Here are our recommendations

• Get the Individual Lightening Lane – If you can afford it, and TRON is important to you, the easiest and most guaranteed method is to just pay for it. I know, it sucks to pay that much money on top of your entry to the park, but that’s just Disney these days.
• Set an Alarm for Drop Times – You need to be logged in to the app before the virtual queue opens. Ideally several minutes before and pulling to refresh for up to two minutes ahead of time. The best way to make sure this happens is to set an alarm for at least 5 minutes before
• Turn Off Your Wi-Fi – Disney World has several different wi-fi signals depending on which park and which resort you’re closest to. You’ll also be competing for bandwidth with everyone else. Turn off your wi-fi to avoid your phone trying to connect to multiple networks, and reduce the company since we all have different providers.
• Consider Deluxe Resorts – While there are many perks, among them is Extra Magic Hours which gives you an additional 3 hours in Magic Kingdom after the park closes (on select nights). It seems a little extreme to book a deluxe-level resort just to experience an attraction, but we all have different priorities.

My Personal Review

I absolutely loved TRON LightCycle Run at Magic Kingdom, but I have to confess that I was terrified. This thrill ride is definitely a stretch from your typical Disney adventure, which could be too much for some guests. I am not exaggerating when I say that I was brought to tears. The safety restraints did not feel secure to me at all, and we were seated on the very first row. I literally thought I was going to fly forward over the handlebars to my death the entire time.

At least I’d be part of Disney history.

In hindsight – the restraints are fine and I was perfectly safe the entire time. I would absolutely ride again, and I’d tell anyone who asked to do the same. Just be prepared to experience a bit more of an adrenaline pump than you’re used to getting from Disney.
