Smoke Jumper’s Grill is located in the Grizzly Peak Airfield area, a section of the park inspired by the wilderness and ruggedness of California’s national parks. The restaurant has an “aviation rescue” theme, and Disney has nailed the details, from weathered wood and military-green seating to old maps and gear on the walls that transport you to a forest ranger outpost. The atmosphere here is both rustic and family-friendly, with a laid-back vibe that feels surprisingly cozy in the morning.

The seating is split between indoor and outdoor areas. Inside, you’ll find communal tables and cozy booths where you can take in the charming decor. Outside, you get a nice view of Grizzly Peak, which feels particularly serene in the early morning hours. If you’re planning to relax over breakfast, I’d recommend grabbing a seat outdoors for the peaceful ambiance before the park fully wakes up.

Menu Overview

What We Ordered at Smoke Jumper’s Grill

We opted for two main items: the Breakfast Sandwich and the Plant-Based Chorizo Burrito. Both were around $13.99, which feels a little high, but the portions make it easier to overlook.

Breakfast Sandwich – $13.99

This hearty sandwich comes with sausage, egg, cheddar, hash browns, SJG sauce, and green chile on a toasted bun, plus a choice of Cuties mandarin oranges or seasoned breakfast fries. The flavors work well together, with the SJG sauce adding a creamy, slightly tangy element that complements the richness of the sausage and egg. The green chile adds a mild heat—nothing overwhelming but enough to keep things interesting.

Our verdict? It’s tasty but not mind-blowing, and the price tag does make it feel a bit steep. If you’ve ever had a McDonald’s breakfast sandwich, the concept here is pretty similar, though the flavors and ingredients are a bit more refined. The fries are an excellent choice if you’re looking for a savory start to the day, but the oranges are a great option for those wanting something lighter.

Plant-Based Chorizo Burrito – $13.99

This was the real surprise! The burrito is filled with plant-based sausage, chorizo, egg, cheese, hash browns, and avocado sauce, served with molcajete salsa. The avocado sauce is creamy and fresh, balancing out the spicy, smoky notes of the chorizo and sausage. If you’re skeptical about plant-based options, this one might convert you.

One pro tip: ask for the molcajete salsa on the side—it’s zesty, with just enough spice to wake up your taste buds, and it goes perfectly with both the burrito and fries. Honestly, we’d recommend asking for extra, as it’s an excellent dip for just about anything on the menu.

Service & Ordering Process

Ordering at Smoke Jumper’s is straightforward and efficient. We chose to order at the register, and within just a few minutes, our food was ready to go. If you’re in a hurry, mobile ordering is also available, which can be a real lifesaver on busy days.

The cast members here were friendly and quick to offer suggestions when we asked about the salsa options, which is always a nice touch. It’s not every day you get cast members enthusiastic about breakfast condiments, but it added a bit of charm to the experience. For a quick-service spot, the efficiency here was great—no standing around or wondering if they lost your order.

Taste & Portion Size

If you’re worried about portion size, rest assured—you won’t leave hungry. Both items were filling enough that we could have easily split one dish between two people, especially with the generous side of seasoned fries. The flavors were satisfying, and while the food is likely pre-made and kept warm, it didn’t taste stale or overly processed. Disney has managed to find a balance where efficiency doesn’t compromise flavor.

California Grill is a signature service restaurant located inside of the Contemporary Hotel at Disney World. It’s famous for it’s unique views of Magic Kingdom, but infamous for it’s menu. This location does not except dining plan credits, and currently offers a prix fix menu.

Pricing starts at $89 per adult for the 3 course meal, with optional wine pairings for an additional cost. A child’s meal will run you $39 each. The menu invites guest to select one option from each section; Market Inspiration (appetizers), Chef’s Journey (entree), and Sweet Creations (dessert).

Be aware the menu may change, without warning, due to ingredient availability and seasonality. If there’s a specific item that you’re going for, it’s worth calling ahead to make sure it will be available during your visit.

Arrival and Check-In

Guests staying at a Disney World Resort, outside of the Magic Kingdom area, can take one of the complimentary buses to Magic Kingdom then either walk or take the monorail to the Contemporary. Guests staying at a nearby Magic Kingdom resort can simply take the monorail.

For guests driving themselves, the dining reservation and ID will need to be presented at the gate upon arrival. We did indeed drive, and were running more than a bit late – as usual. Having both of these handy helped save a few minutes on our rush to meet the reservation time.

The Contemporary is an absolutely beautiful resort. The art deco design of the exterior extends into the lobby and throughout the full property. It’s always been on my wish list to stay, even for just a night. However, on this night the line for the elevators snaked around the lobby filled with frustrated families.

While I don’t know if that’s normal for the resort or if it was just because we were in a hurry. But, luckily it didn’t matter. Check-in for the California Grill is on the second floor, accessible by either stairs or an escalator.

Pixie Pointer: If you are not able to use stairs or an escalator, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early to ensure you have plenty of time to check-in.

Arriving on the second floor we saw a desk with 2 cast members and a large sign for the restaurant. Finally!! After checking in we were directed to an elevator used exclusively for access to California Grill (maybe that explains the line).

Reservation Timing

The hype for California Grill is all around the Firework viewing. The food is highly rated (we’ll get there), but the fireworks are what bring people in. So, we were more than a little disappointed to be seated in the back of the restaurant 10 minutes before the show was about to start. Things were going well.

Once our server arrived though, they directed us to the outdoor viewing area and took our appetizer order so it would be ready when we returned.

I’ve since learned that you can enjoy California Grill during any time they are open, and come back later for the fireworks – as long as you keep your receipt. There’s even first come first serve seating at the bar. Next time we eat here, I’ll book dinner during sunset and come back for the fireworks. Twice the ambiance and I won’t be dreaming of desert the whole time.

Feasting on Fireworks

I’m not sure which part of “outdoor rooftop viewing” failed to trigger my guttural feal of heights when I was researching this adventure. But I was quickly reminded once we walked out the dining room doors to the observation deck.

Oh! Did I mention I’m wearing heels and a dress? And there was a wind advisory. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get many pictures due to my death grip on the handrail during the entire display.

Between my bouts of absolute terror, however, the view really is magical. Happily Ever After, and all the Magic Kingdom firework shows, are so much bigger than you can see standing in front of Cinderella’s castle. The fireworks extend from Tomorrowland nearly to Frontierland, further than you could ever see from the ground.

Being nearly level with the show, the intricacies and designs of each firework appear. You don’t realize until you’re up this high that some of them explode in the shape of Maui’s hook, or Mickey’s face.

Growing up my father worked on fourth of July fireworks in our town, so we got to sit real close. I’m talking fearful that the ash would fall on me, close. Nothing can top that memory, but the firework viewing at California Grill came pretty close. It’s amazing how different these beautiful explosions appear depending on where you can see them from.

Prix Fix Food

As the show ended, I pried my hand from the rail and shuffled my (now barefoot) feet back into the dining room as quickly (and intentionally) as possible. Once back on dry land, so to speak, our attentions were firmly situated on the meal to come.

Appetizer

I ordered the Beet Salad to start. Citrus-roasted Beets, Pistachio-Hempseed Brittle, Vanilla Pudding, Fresh Fruit, Sherry Vinaigrette, and Petite Upland Cress. Let me start by saying that I don’t like beets, but it was the only plant based option on the menu and I’m still working on my mission to eat everything plant based in Disney.

And I was pleasantly surprised! The beets are slow roasted to perfection with a natural sweetness that I would choose over sugary candy any day. The earthy brittle adds a welcomed crispness to the salad, that breaks up the otherwise tender dish. The sherry vinaigrette is tart and tantalizing. At this point it’s the best thing I’ve ever had at Disney – but, that became a trend throughout the evening.

My partner in crime had the Spice Kanzan Roll with Crab, Shrimp, Scallops and Tuna under a Fireball Sauce. It was delectable and fresh, but not the best sushi we’ve had. Both dishes were phenomenal and we’d order again.

Chef’s Journey

For our entrees we ordered the Chicken Ballotine and the Corn and Mushroom Mezzaluna. We were having very different experiences across the table from each other, which became pretty clear at this point.

The online menu did not list the Corn and Mushroom Mezzaluna, instead it had a Pumpkin Ravioli – which I was very much looking forward to. But, once we had the physical menu in hand Mezzaluna was the available plant-based option. When my dish came out I could’ve sworn that it was scallops. Nothing about this plate looked plant-based. I even called over our server to confirm, apparently they get that question a lot.

I was shook. The trumpet mushrooms did not taste like meat, but they certainly tasted meaty. This was a hardy filled pasta dish, decorated with delicately roasted vegetables. But that’s over simplifying what is in arguably the best thing I’ve ever had at Disney World (since the appetizer).

The same couldn’t be said for the Chicken Ballotine. While the dressings on the dish were Instagram worthy, the chicken itself was a bit too far out there for us. The flavor was phenomenal. The process to confit intensifies the savory umami flavor to a level we didn’t know existed. But the texture was gelatinous and a bit gooey. Call us boring or traditional, but this wasn’t our cup of tea.

Sweet Creations

At this point, it was starting to get late. If I have one major critique it’s how long this whole experience takes. Between the death defying observation deck and my partner’s lack luster experience so far, we asked to have our desert to go.

We had ordered the Peanut and Banana Torte and the Strawberry and Pistachio Mousse Cake. I should probably mention that we made this reservation to celebrate our anniversary, which our server helped us to celebrate with a complimentary Vanilla Chocolate Ganache Torte. Extra stars awarded for bonus dessert.

As beautiful as The California Grill is, as much as I enjoy the service of a fancy restaurant, and even with the beautiful views of the surrounding area. Absolutely nothing felt better than taking off my shoes, sitting in bed back at our hotel and indulging in dessert (and champagne we grabbed from the Club Lounge) to cap off the night.

Of all 3 sweet treats, the Vanilla Chocolate Ganache Torte was the clear winner – we fought over it. In fact, it was the best thing I’ve ever had at Disney World (since the entree). The Peanut and Banana Torte had an overwhelming banana taste that I couldn’t even finish. And the Strawberry and Pistachio Torte was fabulous, but it just couldn’t compare.

Overall Expereince

We loved California Grill at the Contemporary, but we learned a lot. I cannot recommend this experience enough – for a special occasion. It’s a bit pricey for an everyday meal and luxury tends to make me a bit uncomfortable. But on an anniversary, a birthday, a honeymoon, or any type of celebration this is a 5-star choice.

The view of the fireworks is breathtaking. The food is beyond compare, and the staff were superstars. As we walked back down the halls of our hotel we talked about how I hadn’t realized my dress was see-through until that exact moment. Yes, I spent 3 hours in a signature dining restaurant unaware that everywhere there could see what color underwear I was wearing. See – tears, fears, and utter embarrassment.

Oh, but we also talked about how it could have been better. So here’s my top tips if YOU want to go to California Grill on your next trip.

• Book an earlier time, don’t dine during fireworks
• Budget for the wine pairings
• Be flexible with your options, make sure there’s more than 1 thing on the menu you like
• Don’t wear heels
• Check the weather for wind advisories
• Fit check before you leave your house or hotel.

If you’re planning a trip to Disney World I am begging you to check out the All Star Sports resort. There are 4 types of resorts at Disney World; value, moderate, deluxe, and DVC. All Star Sports is one of the value options, along with:

• All Star Music
• All Star Movies
• Pop Century
• Art of Animation

There’s a few differences between each type of resort, the biggest though difference is the price. But first, let’s talk about what comes with that price.

Location and Theming at All Star Sports

The All Star Sports Resort is located at 1701 W. Buena Vista Dr., Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830, in the Animal Kingdom/ESPN area of Disney World. Making it a short trip to Animal Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Blizzard Beach. It’s one of the southmost resort and fastest to venture off property as well, with just a short 15 minute drive to the closest Walmart.

But what All Star Sports, and most value resorts, are really known for is the larger than life theming. There are four sections each representing a different sport.

Surf’s Up!

The surfing themed area of the hotel is home to the main pool and the closest section to the lobby, food court, gift shop, and laundry facility.

Here you’ll find boardwalks, instead of sidewalks, lined by vibrant surfboards measuring 38 feet tall. More than 900 fish cut-outs line the railing of each building’s exterior walkways.

Hoops Hotel

Adorned with more than 70 basketballs, measuring more than 5 feet around, is the Hoops Hotel. Here, the buildings feature team pennants surrounding the top of each building.

Two bright red whistles measuring more than 60 feet tall are placed at either end of the courtyard. Alongside huge cheerleading type megaphones near each stairwell.

Touchdown!

Across from the pool is the football themed area, featuring a mini field – complete with a play mapped on the ground. I’m told this specific play is a fake-out, intended to deceive the other team. To me, however, it looks like a failed game of tic-tac-toe.

On either side of the field sits a football helmet, large enough for a 200 foot tall player, which house the buildings primary staircase. Goal posts rise from the ground at each end of the field, more than 3 stories tall!

Homerun Hotel

A smaller quiet pool can be found in the Homerun Hotel which is themed to baseball. Here the walkways are covered in chain link fence and lit by red hanging lights, making it feel like you’re in the dugout for your favorite team!

Speaking of teams, MLB pennants are prominently displayed along the top of each building – can you find your favorite? (It’s the San Diego Padres for us!). At the end of each building is a larger than life Coca Cola cup – big enough to hold 240 million gallons of soda!

Center Court

On the outskirts of the resort is Center Court featuring tennis theming. The courtyard is made to look like an actual tennis court and is home to statues of Donald, Huey, Dewey, and Louis!

Along the rails of each walkway are 50 foot tall tennis racquets, and hundreds of bright green tennis balls.

During our visit we actual met Donald, Goofy, and Pluto on the court playing tennis! They were visiting the resort as part of the Character Caravan, which brings characters to select resorts each day to meet with guests!

All Star Sports Accommodation Options

There are 1920 room at the All Star Sports resort. Each room features two queen beds, 1 stand alone and 1 murphy style. Up to 4 guests would be able to sleep comfortably.

The footprint of each room is surprisingly spacious. Largely due to the foldout bed which Disney calls a table-bed, I promise it’s better than it sounds!

During the day you have a generously sized table with 2 chairs.

By night, a cute themed bed perfect for kids or bunkmates.

Inside the room you’ll also find an empty mini-fridge. Perfect for housing some light snacks or bottled water.

The primary bed is raised to allow suitcase storage, freeing up even more floor space.

Across from the beds is a large dresser vanity with 4 big drawers, a cupboard, and safe. The smart TV is hung on the wall above.

A small group of hooks are mounted on the nearby wall, for jackets and Loungefly’s you may need to store.

The bathroom is split into two areas. First is the sink, vanity, and closet area. There’s a small open closest for hanging any dresses, button downs, or other fancy clothing.

A huge mirror sits overtop of the sink, with a thin but long counter area. There’s plenty of storage above and below for keeping toiletries close at hand.

Trough a sliding door is the toilet and shower stall, complete with rainfall shower head.

And everyone’s favorite, H2O amenities.

Dining Options

The End Zone! Dining Hall is where you can find lots of quick service dining options. There are four windows with made to order options including pizza & pasta, sandwiches, American/bule plate, and dessert.

We've tried a lot of dishes from the End Zone, but the Impossible Meatloaf with garlic roasted greenbeans and mashed potatoes is by far the favorite. 

Resort refillable mugs can also be purchased here. These are single priced keepsake mugs that you can use over and over for the length of your stay. It gives you access to unlimited soda, tea, and (most importantly) coffee.

Recreational Activities

All Star Sports hosts a variety of activities each day including mini pool parties, campfires, and a s’more station on select nights. It’s the best way to start (or end) your stay at Disney!

Pools

There are 2 pools at the All Star Sports resort. The main, larger, pool is located near the lobby and food court in the Surf’s Up! section of the resort. Here you’ll find a full service poolside bar, featuring a number of specialty drinks themed to the resort.

Dive-in movies are played on a projector screen select nights, and can be seen from the water or lounge chairs around the pool’s parameter.

A smaller quiet pool, shaped as a baseball diamond, can be found in the Homerun Hotel. I absolutely love the theming here! From the oversized scoreboard and grandstands, to the base lines painted on the bottom of the pool. I cannot get over the attention to detail.

Arcade

Inside the main lobby building is the Game Point Arcade. It’s home to all your favorite video games and pinball machines, as well as a photo booth and some new instant classics.

Transportation

The All Star Sports Resort offers complimentary transportation to each park by bus. Guests can travel to Animal Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Magic Kingdom as well as Disney Springs.

Buses to each location leave every 15 minutes. Service to the theme parks begins 45 minutes prior to park opening, and continues 1 hour past close.

Buses to Disney Springs are available starting at normal opening hours for Disney Springs. You can catch a bus back to your hotel up to 1 hour after Disney Springs closes.

Nearby Attractions and Facilities

All Star Sports is a value resort, its a great option for any one on a budget. And if you’re on a budget, you’re going to love that McDonalds is right down the street. Walking distance to discount meals.

This is a big win as Disney food can get expensive fast. The drive-thru is also extremely convenient if you have a car and are driving to the parks, just swing by on your way out.

While the resort is on property, it’s right on the edge of that Disney bubble. Making it easy for guests with cars to pop-out to Walmart, Target, or any number of nearby restaurants.

Experience and Service

Your room might come at a discounted price, but the service is still top-tier. Starting with the baggage service available outside the lobby. Just pull up and drop your bags off before checking in for your room.

Baggage attendants make several delivery rounds each day though, so don’t expect your luggage to be delivered immediately. It could be up to five hour before you see your suitcase, so be sure to bring a small bag with anything you need before then.

Check-in is a breeze in this newly renovated lobby. The staff while ask for your ID and credit card before providing information about your room location and how to access. A viewing area is available for all showing Disney cartoons to keep littles entertained while parents check in.

If, like us, you prefer a no-contact check-in option you can do so on the My Disney Experience app. Just open the app, up to 30 days, before your arrival and answer a few questions. Your room number will be assigned near check-in at 3:00pm. Then open the door with either your connected Magic Band or the Disney app.

Check-out is even easier. Open the My Disney Experience before check-out at 11:00am, and you’ll receive a notification that you’re good to go.

Pricing and Value

Here’s the kicker – you get all of this value for as low as $150 per night. Rates vary depending on when you are visiting, with the highest we’ve seen around $250 during the height of the holiday season.

Prices are valid for up to 2 adults, with a small surcharge for additional guests 18 or older.

Preferred Rooms

While there is just one room layout at All Star Sports, there are both standard and preferred rooms.

The preferred rooms are located in buildings 1, 6, 7 and 10 which are the Surf’s Up and Touchdown! sections of the resort. These rooms are situated closer to the food court, pool, transportation and lobby.

Tips and Recommendations

The All Star Sports Resort is the most affordable option on property at Disney World. It’s amazing to have immersive theming, complimentary transportation, and on-site amenities at these price-points.

What All Star Sports is not, is a luxury hotel. You won’t find concierge service, fitness center, or hot tub here. But you don’t need any of those at Disney, when you’re spending most of your day in the parks.

Here’s our top tips to make the most of your stay at All Star Sports:

• Plan your trip during early spring or summer
• Check for discounts – there’s almost always a deal
• Check for discounted Dining Packages
• Decorate your door and window! All Stars is a great place to celebrate. We’ve seen banners, balloons, streamers, and even pin trading boards!

Obviously, we were there to see it all. Not necessarily try it all – there’s way too many options, but we gave it our best shot.

Impossible Chicken Parm Bites

Served with Tomato and Cheese Sauces and Grated Parmesan, is available at the Earth Eats booth in the Hollywood Backlot area. The dish features Impossible brand imitation chicken nuggets slathered in marinara sauce and loaded with cheese.

The texture of the chicken closely resembles the real thing; it’s moist and tender. However, the breading absorbs quite a bit of the sauce and could have been crispier.

The marinara sauce is simple and straight to the point. A little sweet, but not overly seasoned but not lacking in flavor. The cheese sauce adds richness and the fun of a good cheese pull.

This is a vegetarian option, not plant-based, which was a bit of a disappointment. Sort of like stopping halfway through a homework assignment because, ‘it’s good enough.’

Overall, we’re giving the Impossible Chicken Parm Bites 3 out of 5 stars. It’s a solid choice for anyone looking for a vegetarian option or who’s looking to try something new.

Impossible Beef Stroganoff

Another option from Earth Eats, the Impossible Beef Stroganoff consists of Egg Noodles Tossed in Mushroom Cream Sauce with Impossible Beef and Sour Cream. This was, not good.

The pasta itself is fine, albeit a bit overcooked. But something about the sauce completely misses the mark. I can’t put my finger on it exactly but I would guess that they’re using canned mushrooms or added too much sour cream.

Between the soft bite of the pasta and sour tasting sauce, this stroganoff earns just 2 stars. And one of those is simply because it’s another meatless option. Surprisingly the Impossible Beef was one of the best things about this.

Watermelon Cucumber Mojito

In a shocking turn of events, the all around favorite this year is the Watermelon Cucumber Mojito earning 5 out of 5 stars.

This cocktail is the perfect drink for a warm park day. It’s dry but refreshing, providing just the right amount of sweetness to make it an extremely dangerous option. The front of the drink has a soft floral flavor, while the back half is heavy on the mint.

Not-so-secretly hoping we see this one again next year!

Carnitas-Style Pork Belly

Surprising absolutely no-one, thick bacon is good. Yes, the Carnitas-Style Pork Belly with Esquites Mac Salad featuring Tajin Habanero tastes quite familiar and that flavor is pure comfort.

It’s comfort food, crispy on the outside but supple, juicy, and succulent in the middle. Biting into it the texture falls apart, melting in your mouth. True to the carnitas style, the pork belly has clearly been slow cooked to perfection. 5 out of 5 stars.

The mac salad on the other hand could use some help. There’s a mayonnaise based dressing that doesn’t really add much to the dish. It’s pretty bland and overdressed, even paired up with the rest of the dish.

Plant Based Baja-Style Fish Taco

Full disclosure, I ate this one and I have never liked fish. So in this completely unbiased review I will explain exactly why this is the worst thing I’ve ever eaten at Disney.

First of all – fish, or fake fish. As a seafood suffragette I can confirm that the texture of this plant based fish is on point. It tastes like chicken to start but the salty sea-brine flavor is not far behind. 0 stars, but if you like seafood or fish tacos, you’ll probably like this.

Coleslaw, pico de gallo, and a cilantro lime crema top the tacos. In all honesty I did not notice these at all, but would have greatly preferred to have just these items in a bowl and avoid the not-fish all together.

Spice Strawberry Cocktail

We love a good festival cocktail, don’t we?! The Spiced Strawberry Cocktail with pineapple, chile spices, tajin, and Chamoy hits the spot.

It’s a sweet and tangy beverage with a bit of a kick. You can taste the alcohol enough to know that it’s there, while still being an easy sipper. The Spiced Strawberry Cocktail reminds of the Pica Fresca candy from an ice cream truck. Or the Chile-Mango Dole Whip across the street at Disneyland’s Tropical Hideaway.

We’re giving this 4 stars. It’s delicious, but it’s pretty sweet by the end. Also, if you don’t like spicy food, drinks, or candy – you probably won’t like this one.

Blueberry Pancake Cold Brew

Made with Maple Syrup, Brown Butter, and a Blueberry Sweet Cream – the Blueberry Pancake Cold Brew is an interesting choice.

I’m all for efficiency, but I prefer my coffee and pancakes to be served in separate containers. It’s a delicious iced coffee with an unusual and unexpected twist. But, it’s on the sweeter side and that’s not just not our preference. 3 out of 5 stars.

Fig Matcha Latte

For the tea lovers we have the Fig Matcha Latte with Fig Oat Sweet Cream and Matcha Powder, which earns a respectable 4 out of 5 stars!

It’s got the earthy forward flavor you love about matcha, with a sweeter and flavorful finish. The Fig Oat Sweet Cream stands out both in taste and appearance, making for an utterly Instagram-able option.

We loved the off-beat nature of green tea over coffee for a mid-day caffeine fix. And the inclusion of another non-dairy option.

Mickey-Shaped Macaron with SNICKERS

Everything tastes better when Mickey shaped, it’s science. And the science did not let us down.

There’s so much to love about the complex macaron from Nuts About Cheese. From the crunch and crack of the crisp outer cookie to the luxuriously soft velvet ganache. This sweet confection is decadently rich.

Drizzled in chocolate sauce and doused in Snickers crumbles. The Mickey Shaped Macaron is a solid 5 stars.

Frozen Mangonada Beer Slush

The Frozen Mangonada Beer Slush might be the single thing we’re most excited about from DCA’s Food and Wine festival this year. Love the whimsy of a grown-up slushie with a, slightly, elevated taste profile.

It’s made with brewery X Baja Boi, mango purée, rock melon syrup, grapefruit juice, and mango-chamoy glaze. And it’s out of this world! To me, it tastes like a melted mango popsicle.

The beer doesn’t stand out much, which is a bit disappointing. But it makes this an easy drink and so refreshing on a hot California day. The Mangonada Slush earns 4 out of 5 stars for it’s icy indulgence.

S’mores Caramel Tart

Towards the bottom of our ranking list is the S’mores Caramel Tart with just 2 stars. While the components of the dessert are each delicious on their own, the sum of the parts isn’t any better than by themselves.

The gram cracker tart shell provides a sturdy and flavorful vessel for the sinfully scrumptious caramel and chocolate ganache. Which is thick enough to warrant a knife, in a good way.

A softer marshmallow would help this dish immensely. What you currently get on top is too tough and impossible to incorporate into a complete bite. We can settle for eating a yummy marshmallow on it’s own though, if we must.

Loaded Baked Potato

There are just ten marketplace kiosks at this years festival, but more participating locations around the resort than ever. Paradise Garden Grill, tucked back in the far corner of the park, is included in those.

First off – Paradise Garden Grill is a vibe. There’s live music throughout the day that routinely has guests on their feet dancing and singing along. Seating and tables are plentiful, and it really feels like stepping into a party.

And any good party needs an amazing menu. We tried the Loaded Baked Potato with Seasoned Impossible Steak Tips and BBQ Baked Beans. However, failed to read the item description and spent far too many minutes trying to figure out why it tasted like barbeque.

Once we actually realized what we had ordered, it all made sense – and was delicious. The Impossible beef tips are cooked tender with just enough bite to be convincing. A creamy cheesey sauce covers it all like a warm blanket, or hug.

And sweet and tangy baked beans are piled high. A crunchy cabbage slaw sits on top for additional texture and freshness. We absolutely love this one and give it 5 out of 5 stars. But it’s huge and sort of defeats the purpose of trying new things at a festival like this.

Pistachio Cheesecake

Last, but far from least, is the Paradise Garden Grill Pistachio Cheesecake with 3 out of 5 stars.

The silky center and tangy taste are everything good about cheesecake. But the flavor fell short with just a handful of pistachios sprinkled on top. We really wanted to love this one, too.

If you’re in the mood for something slightly sweet, without being overwhelming, this would be a great option. It is in the very back of the park though and I wouldn’t go out of my way to grab it.

Look no further than Red Rose Tavern.

Where is Red Rose Tavern Located?

In the center of Fantasyland, beside Pinocchio’s Daring Journey and facing the Storybookland Canal, you’ll find the Red Rose Tavern. It’s a Beauty and the Beast inspired dining location. Here you’ll find fare from the classic film like The Grey Stuff and a souvenir Red Rose sipper.

This is a quick-service location. Meaning that you will order at a register and pick-up at a counter, rather than a server bringing you your order. There were lots of open tables and chairs inside during our visit. Patio dining is also available, but our table was a bit harder to come by on this beautifully sunny SoCal day.

Breakfast Menu

Red Rose Tavern has one of the best breakfast menus in all of Disneyland. There’s just 4 options, but they run the gauntlet of breakfast options. You can even modify a dish to customize it just to your liking.

We opted to try 2 of these dishes; the Bonjour Breakfast and Little Town Harvest Bowl which is plant based.

Bonjour! Breakfast – $9.49

Giving some favorite breakfast standbys a twist, the Bonjour! Breakfast plate features soft and fluffy scrambled eggs piled high on top of seasoned potato barrels. Your choice of bacon or sausage is sprinkled on top, and the whole thing is accompanied with a miniature croissant.

We absolutely loved how effortlessly delicious this dish was. It’s an easy entry item filled with familiar foods that many people will enjoy. There was minimal seasoning, but a condiments bar featured salt, pepper, ketchup, and hot sauce. Everything you’d need to make it your own.

Little Town Harvest Bowl – $9.99

Though similarly built on a base of potato barrels, this dish stands out all on it’s own. A wonderful mix of roasted cauliflower, mushrooms, tomato, and arugula tower on top of a heaping helping of savory quinoa. A spicy lime aioli tops it all offs and packs a flavorful punch.

This is one of the best breakfast bowls I’ve had, maybe ever. I loved everything about it from the crispy potatoes to the umami of the vegetable additions. The quinoa adds protein and amps up the whole bowl with an additional layer of texture. The lime aioli is what really takes this one over the top though. It’s creamy, bright, and adds just a hint of heat.

Service and Experience

We did experience an issue during our meal where the wrong item had been rung up and we did not notice until the food came out. The team here was great though, quickly preparing the corrected item and allowing us to swap.

The Red Rose Tavern is a must stop if you are looking for a quick breakfast inside Disneyland park. Between the scenic location, delicious food, and friendly service – it simply can’t be beat.

California Adventure Food and Wine Festival Coverage

There’s quite a few festival treats on their full menu, but one in particular that caught our eye. It’s the Loaded Baked Potato with Seasoned Steak Tips and BBQ Baked Beans. Topped with Cheese Sauce, Tangy Slaw and Green Onions.

One of the few entirely plant based options at DCA Food and Wine this year, it has a few surprises in store.

First off – this thing is HUGE! I can’t even imagine how much the potato weighed before being topped, but this plate felt like it was 5 lbs! With a $13.99 price tag to match. There is plenty enough to share with 2-3 people, possibly more if you’re trying to taste all the festival plates.

The Loaded Baked Potato is delicious. The interior is soft and fluffy, with a buttery taste on it’s own. The beef tips look like they have been cooked or stewed for a long time, as they’re nearly falling apart and melt in your mouth.

While the description lists BBQ Baked Beans as one of the toppings, the sweetness takes you by surprise. I’m not sure why I wasn’t expecting this, but it exceeded those expectations.

Overall, this is 4 out of 5 stars. The cheese sauce was a bit bland, and there was far too much of it. The potato was nearly drowning in queso – which sounds a lot better than it actually is, I promise. I would love to have an element of crunch as well, the texture is fairly one dimensional.

While this isn’t a must-have item at this years DCA Food and Wine Festival, it’s a good option to split with a group for a lower cost (per person).

Disney hosted the first ever Jollywood Nights this weekend! The brand new Christmas party takes place in Hollywood Studios and is full of glitz and glam. There’s shows, character meets, and so many delicious treats – but with a $100+ price, is it worth it?

Checking in at Jollywood Nights

We were there for the first party and, we’ve got a LOT to say about the event. The night starts at 7:00pm when part guests are able to enter the park. Day guests who have already entered the park are able to claim they’re event wristband at the Mickey Shorts theater, anytime after 6:00pm.

The night was off to a pretty rough start as the line inside the park to check-in was longer than the queue for Slinky Dog Dash. And it was even worse outside. Simply put, there were too many people flooding in during a short window, with too few distribution spots.

Entertainment at Jollywood Nights

With any event at Disney, even a day trip to the parks, it helps to know what you want to prioritize. For us that top priority was the ‘What’s This‘ Sing-a-long at the Hyperion theater.

What’s This Sing-A-Long

This show was fantastic. The atmosphere in a room full of fans, belting their favorite Tim Burton songs for 20 minutes is phenomenal. Having grown up watching this film I can only equate this experience to when I saw Queen (with Adam Lambert) live.

There’s just something about the comradery of NBC fans that elevates the sing-a-long. But that’s not all! Both Oogie Boogie and Jack Skellington make towering appearances on stage. It’s good to see they’ve found another use for the magnificent Jack puppet used during Mickey’s Not So Spooky Spooktacular.

Holidays in Hollywood

Holidays in Hollywood is the second nighttime entertainment show offered at Jollywood Nights. It takes place at the Theater of the Stars near the Tower of Terror once an hour for the duration of the party. The line gets extremely long and, unlike during the day, the theater will fill up completely. Once you get in though, this is another home run for the event.

Disney defiantly over-sold the Muppets, using images of Kermit and Miss Piggy in all the ads and media. This infamous pair are in the show, and they are perfection, but only for a few minutes. However – Miss Piggy singing a rendition of ‘Toyland’ to celebrate the presents she’s expecting for Christmas is perfection.

There are also TWO princesses who make appearances, both in exclusive costumes and singing holiday songs. Tiana has an original song all about celebrating in her restaurant and everything she loves about the holidays.

Belle, of course, brings the Beauty and the Beast Holiday Special to life by singing ‘As Long As There’s Christmas’ in her winter best.

And let’s not forget the real stars of the show!

Mickey and Minnie arrive halfway through the celebration with a merry mashup of holiday classics. Spoiler alert: they kiss under the mistletoe! My heart can barely handle how adorable this section of Holidays in Hollywood is.

Jingle Bell Jingle Bam

At the end of the night party guests are treated to a final kiss goodnight with the return of ‘Jingle Bell Jingle Jam.’ This fireworks spectacular is a big hit with Disney parks fan and it’s return is was warmly welcomed.

We found that the crowds all congregated in the main courtyard about 30 minutes before the show. This is when we finally saw just how many people were in the parks and it was astonishing. The party exclusive fireworks were more crowded than the two regularly scheduled shows for daytime guests earlier in the evening.

Some of the best spots to view Jingle Bell Jingle Bam are near the park entrance along the street of gift shops. From here you have a great vantage point to see everything happening on the facade of Runaway Railway and the widespread fireworks. You’ll also be ahead of the pack as everyone rushes to make their exit.

Characters at Jollywood Nights

Jollywood Nights was packed with character meet and greets, including several rare and exclusive characters. Most notably was Phineas and Ferb! Having grown up with these two I was ecstatic to take a picture. But this is where things started to go downhill. The wait time for this meet and greet was consistently above 2 hours all night. During a 4 hour event.

But look at how freaking cute this little scene is! Peep Perry the Platypus as the Christmas Tree topper! Honestly I wish I would have waited this one out, but I can’t justify spending half of an event in line for a character meet. Even if it is these guys.

Many of Disney’s limited parties are known for rare characters and the absurd queue times people are willing to wait for. Just look at the waits for Jack and Sally or The Seven Dwarves during Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party! But this was just out of hand, and extremely disorganized.

More Characters at Throwback Bash

It wasn’t just our favorite backyard engineers at the Throwback Bash though. Max Goof was there dressed as Powerline as well as Chip and Dale as the Rescue Rangers. Each of these lines were out of control, winding around planters and into primary walkways. We’re hoping Hollywood Studios takes notes from the Magic Kingdom parties and starts these meet and greets early for the remaining parties.

Mickey, Minnie, and Friends

There were even more characters scattered throughout the park including the Sensational Six in their winter outfits and some notable super heroes.

Wait times for these interactions were far more reasonable, 20-30 minutes max. But Disney let us down here again, by not delivering on what they promised. One thing I was most looking forward to was Frozone’s Snow Zone.

Frozone

This was described as a snow play area with character meet and greet. Frozone, Disney said, would be making it snow on Pixar Place. What we got was Frozone against a blue back drop with painted snowflakes and an embarrassingly small amount of snoap.

Maybe it’s on me, but I was expecting a cold-room filled with manufactured snow. Instead we got a mural with a hint of soap bubbles. I know it’s Florida, but there are snow rooms at Christmas carnivals in Hawaii – Disney could absolutely make it happen if they wanted to.

Dance Parties at Jollywood Nights

During the event mini neighborhood parties were placed throughout Hollywood Studios. Each venue had it’s own theme as well as live performances.

We had a moonlight musical at the Tip Top Soire in the Tower of Terror Courtyard.

A rocking good time with the Fa-La-La-La-Land DJ on Sunset Boulevard.

And you can samba the night away on Commissary Lane with the Caliente band.

For me, this is where the night really fell apart.

Disney hosts tons of events throughout the year, including a lengthy series of concerts across the lake at Epcot. They should know how to set up a stage.

And yet, we found this too small to enjoy settings. The performers were all phenomenal. Amazing singers, fantastic bands, and a DJ that could liven up any party – almost.

The issue is that the performance spaces were, in most cases, a taped off square on the street. There should be stages to allow guests multiple vantage points. Dance floors should be set up in the area, and maybe throw some cast members out there to start the party.

This was the easiest part of the event, live music. There’s no reason that Disney should not have done more and done better. It was a huge disappointment and honestly felt a little cheeky of Disney to blatantly put forth so little effort in these areas.

Food and Beverages at Jollywood Nights

Last and probably least to be honest, is the food and beverage options at Jollywood Nights. If you think 2 hours is too long to wait for a character meet – pack snacks.

Kiosks throughout the park had lines wrapping around each other. Guests were waiting over 2 hours (again) for a green Christmas milkshake.

Hollywood Brown Derby

And then there’s the Hollywood Brown Derby. One of the few sit down restaurants that stayed open during the event. With a walk-up wait list, this venue should have hosted a jazzy Christmas party filled with cocktails and piano music.

We couldn’t even figure out how to join the waitlist. Other guests that I talked with said this was because it had filled up less than 30 minutes into the party. And those that got inside were just disappointed. Reviews for the food and cocktails are not positive, and even worse for the vibes of the venue.

I will say that we did not encounter the long waits for the snacks that we purchased. We must have been traveling against the flow of traffic though, because the stands we visited had humungous lines a short while later.

Santa Gertie Sugar Cookie and Soft Serve

The Santa Gertie Sugar Cookie is one I was really looking forward to and I’m so thrilled we were able to get. Just. Look. At. It! This park icon is looking too cute in cookie form, I almost couldn’t bring myself to eat her!

Almost….

This treat also came with mint flavored soft serve in a frosty green color. Would not recommend, unless you really enjoy brushing your teeth. The frozen toothpaste flavor was not subtle. Dipping little Gertie into her very own soft serve pool helped to balance the flavor profile, but I’d just skip the ice cream all together.

Sugar Cookie Martini

We also got to try the Sugar Cookie Martini which is an absolute home run. Not only is it deceptively strong and dangerously delicious, it’s so pretty! We love a well dressed cocktail.

These sprinkles are giving festive.

The taste of this treat is liquified sugar cookie, very true to the name. It’s extremely sweet on it’s own, paired with the sugary rim and cookie breadstick – it could be too sweet for some. I loved this and would have gone back for a second, but the line was already out of hand.

Jollywood Nights, so far, is a case of Disney over promising and under delivering. It was extremely disappointing, especially for the $185 price. I love the concept and I think it could be better than Mickey’s Very Merry with a few adjustments.

It was extremely evident that the park’s cast members were also taking notes and getting their barring’s around the event. There were managers and media cast members everywhere carrying iPads and cameras. I really hope the team overseeing Jollywood Nights is looking at the reviews and making improvements, so the rest of the parties go off without a hitch.

Nestled a mere two blocks away from the gates of Disneyland, The Anaheim Hotel presents itself as a quaint, moderately priced option for those looking to stay close to the magic. While it may look like a budget motel, the proximity to Disneyland and the range of amenities make this good neighbor hotel a worthy consideration for your next Disney adventure.

Location and Accessibility

You can literally see Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: Breakout from this courtyard!

Just a brisk 10-minute walk separates the hotel guests from the whimsical adventures awaiting in Disneyland. The hotel offers on-site parking for a one-time fee covering the duration of the stay. However, it’s worth noting that the lot is also open to public parking at a fee, which could potentially lead to a parking crunch, especially during mid to late afternoons.

During my stay I was able to watch the Disneyland fireworks from the hotel courtyard. This is a great tip if you arrive at the hotel a day early, have kiddos who need to get to bed before the show starts, or just want to avoid the pure insanity in the parks at the end of the night. Tuck the little ones into bed and you can watch the show just a few steps away.

Check-in/out Experience

Check-in at The Anaheim Hotel is 4:00 PM, with a check-out time of 11:00 AM the following day. We were very lucky during our visit and were able to access our room around 8:00am, when we arrived.

I make it a habit to call ahead when arriving early to confirm the front desk will hold luggage. It’s a small step that often leads to a smoother check-in experience. It also lets the staff know what time you expect to be there and potentially help to check-in early.

The staff here is phenomenal, each interaction friendly and pleasant. Clerks that we spoke with would ask us about our plans for the day and how we were enjoying our stay. It’s a level of customer service you don’t really see much, but it made us feel so welcome!

Hotel Structure and Ambiance

The Anaheim Hotel leans more towards a motel with exterior hallways and a modest-sized lobby. The lobby itself exudes warmth and a welcoming aura. With several seating sections, a lobby bar, and an adjacent Pizza Press, it provides a cozy hangout spot.

The Pizza Press, offers a full menu though slightly upcharged, as well as breakfast. Both the gift shop and Lobby bar have additional options for purchase – there’s no shortage of snacks.

The Anaheim Hotel Pool and Courtyard

The hotel is made up of several buildings each with two floors, and filled with guest rooms. The property boasts a range of recreational options including a pool, jacuzzi, spa, and a small gym. The pool, nestled in the central courtyard, is surrounded by fun oversized decor, providing a playful backdrop for a leisurely swim.

Concrete picnic areas with tables, chairs, and string lights nestled between buildings create fun spots to unwind and enjoy the outdoors. There’s plenty of space to run around, do cart wheels, and enjoy a some solitude and relaxation if you are looking for it.

Room and Amenities

We booked a standard double room, which ended up being on the first floor near the pool. This room is huge, it might be bigger than my living room in all honesty. There is tons of room between the beds and entertainment center to walk, sit, pull in a rollaway, or even do yoga. The room is outfitted with mid-century modern furnishings and artwork.

Entering the room a closet and the restroom were to the immediate left. Again, this closest was much larger than expected and certainly roomy enough to house our meager packings. In fact we were able to unpack and fit the three empty suitcases back in this closest. The exterior door doubles as a full length mirror providing a secondary venue for guests to get ready in the morning. No more fighting over room at the bathroom sink.

A hair dryer, iron, and ironing board are provided by the hotel and stored here in the closest.

Bathroom and Utilities

The bathroom was also spacious, though I do wish there was a separate water closet. The sink vanity was large enough for double sinks and the mirror took up the entire wall.

A scale is provided in the room as well. I’m not about to step on it while I’m on vacation, but you do you.

The shower is stocked with complimentary toiletries including shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. With a curved curtain rod there’s and equally spacious feeling to even this small area.

The bathroom, and entire room, was clean and well kept. Even the faucet in the bathtub was sparkling clean.

Entertainment Center and Work Area

Heading back into the main part of the room you find the dresser, entertainment center and workstation. There is more than enough storage in this room, between the oversized closet and this six drawer dresser. The TV is a decent size though out of scale with the enormity of the room.

The desk fits a laptop with plenty of working space left. A coffee maker and supplies are provided for a quick jolt in the morning, though I’d recommend stopping by the Lobby Bar or Pizza Press instead.

Another big perk at The Anaheim Hotel is the in-room mini fridge. It is so convenient to tuck away drinks and snacks either from home or left overs from the parks.

The Patio

My absolute favorite aspect of The Anaheim Hotel is the humongous patio, or balcony, in each room. Our patio on the first floor was roughly the same size as the hotel room itself. It came equipped with a patio lounger, two chairs and a bistro table.

It is the perfect place to kick back and read a book during a daytime break from the parks. This feels like such a luxury and at an affordable rack rate that beats on property hotels.

The Bad

A review without full transparency is useless, so we’re committed to complete honesty. Unfortunately, there is major downside that comes with any budget friendly hotel near Disney – everybody wants to stay there. We found out, the hard way, that The Anaheim Hotel is pretty popular with the high school groups. There were several dance groups in the parks during our stay and later I spotted them around the hotel.

It’s wasn’t much of an issue except that the room directly above us seemed to be housing quite a few of the program’s kids. As a former choir kid myself, I’ve had more than my fair share of fun on overnighters. While it was a bit of an annoyance that we could here them clunking and talking late at night, but after a full day in the park it wasn’t nearly enough to keep us up. Plus I couldn’t bring myself to spoil their fun by calling the front desk.

Just know that you may be able to hear your neighbors and those neighbors may be a group of teenage girls basically having a slumber party.

For those looking to stay close to Disneyland without breaking the bank, The Anaheim Hotel offers a balanced blend of convenience, amenities, and affordability. Its unique features like the outdoor patio and friendly staff make it a top choice for Disney explorers. The Anaheim Hotel may be the best kept secret for hotels at Disneyland.

Nestled in the heart of Epcot’s UK Pavilion, the Rose and Crown Dining Room offers a quaint British pub and dining experience amidst the bustling excitement of Walt Disney World. Here, guests can escape into a cozy old-world setting while enjoying a view of the World Showcase Lagoon. It is one of several locations, including Spice Road Table, that offer a firework dining package.

The Rose and Crown takes pride in delivering a slice of British hospitality right in the heart of Florida. With its traditional British fare and picturesque setting, it aims to transport diners across the pond without leaving the magical bounds of Disney.

Atmosphere and Decor

As we stepped into the dining room, an old-world charm enveloped us with its rich redwood work and delicate plaster designs gracing the ceiling. The large windows framed a serene view of the lagoon, a sight to behold. The ambiance exuded a sense of calm and sophistication that’s often rare in a busy theme park.

Adding a touch of elegance was a pianist, whose melodies filled the room with a classy atmosphere. It was a scene plucked right out of a British period drama, and for a moment, we were transported to a quaint eatery in the heart of London.

Menu and Drinks at the Rose and Crown Dining Room

Navigating the Rose and Crown Dining Room menu, the choices were fairly limited. Pretty typical for a theme park restaurant. However, the offerings were a delightful representation of British cuisine, offering a taste of the UK far from its shores.

The most popular item available is Fish and Chips – which are actually not the same dish offered at the to-go window around the corner. I was absolutely thrilled to find a plant based option on this menu! English food has a reputation for be very meat and potato heavy, so it was a welcome surprise to find an Impossible dish snuck in.

Beverage Selection

The Rose and Crown Dining Room is attached to the Rose and Crown Pub, allowing you a full selection of drinks. While there are quite a few delicious sounding cocktails, it feels illegal to order anything besides a Guinness here.

When in Rome… or the UK anyway.

Another pleasant surprise is the non-alcoholic selection available on the drinks menu. There are several mocktails and even an NA beer; the 0.0 Heineken. It just makes me unreasonably excited to see Disney making space for all manner of lifestyle in the parks. Epcot is well known for adult activities like drinking around the world, and these NA options make it accessible for so many more people.

The Savory Impossible Hot Pot

Being a fan of plant-based dishes, the savory impossible hot pot caught my eye. It was introduced as a plant-based rendition of the traditional shepherd’s pie, encompassing seasonal veggies in a plant-based meat casserole nestled under a layer of mashed potatoes.

Sadly, I have to report that this ain’t it. The mashed potatoes were a hit, creamy and comforting. They are rich with an indulgent taste that nearly makes you question how this was achieved without butter. The flavor falls a bit flat here though, tasting bland and un exciting. Worse yet the salt and pepper shaker were clogged so it was pretty hopeless trying to revive them.

The rest of the dish hit a sour note, literally, as a vinegar-tasting sauce smothered the veggies and meat substitute, eclipsing their flavors. I’ve never had traditional Shepherd’s pie, only what we made at home growing up. So I’m completely open to the fact that my expectations were wrong. However, this was just bad. I’m a big condiments girly and I put vinegar on most things, including my fries, but this was off putting.

It was a valiant attempt at plant-based option, but the execution left a lot of room for improvement.

The Meat-Based Shepherd’s Pie

Our culinary journey continued with the meat-based shepherd’s pie. This dish boasted ground beef, seasonal veggies, English peas, mashed potatoes, and a sprinkle of Irish cheddar. The aroma was inviting, promising a hearty meal reminiscent of classic British comfort food.

Much like its plant-based counterpart, this dish too was ambushed by the overpowering sauce. The vinegar essence in the sauce left a tangy aftertaste that didn’t quite sit well with us. It was a dish that held promise but fell short in delivering the comforting experience we craved.

For better or for worse there was very little different between the plant based and meat based versions of this dish. You can tell Impossible meat is used in the plant-based version, by the texture. But the meat-based option suffered the same issues.

Rose and Crown Dining Room Price Point

The price point at Rose and Crown is what you’d expect from a theme park restaurant. It wasn’t a steal, but it wasn’t crazy either. The pricing reflects the ambiance and the location, nestled in one of the most visited theme parks in the world.

Compared to other dining options within Epcot, it sits in a moderate price range. While the cost is justified by the location and the ambiance, the food might not offer the value one would expect for such prices.

Seating and Comfort

The seating arrangement was cozy with ample space between tables. The chairs were comfortable, and the lighting was just right, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It’s a place where one can unwind and soak in the serene view outside.

However, as the evening progressed, the noise level did elevate a bit, perhaps due to the growing crowd. It’s a minor hiccup in what otherwise was a comfortable and pleasant setting.

Overall Experience

Despite the hiccup in the culinary department, the atmosphere and service at the Rose and Crown Dining Room were commendable. The staff was attentive and the surroundings pleasant, making it a nice escape from the usual theme park hustle.

We couldn’t help but notice a shared sentiment of disappointment among other diners around us, mirroring our own experience. The location of the restaurant is ideal for catching the nighttime show, and the firework dining package is a cherry on top. But, the food didn’t quite hit the mark, casting a shadow on our recommendation.

Our visit to Rose and Crown was a mixed bag of delightful ambiance and a letdown in the food department. While the setting was picturesque and the service attentive, the food left much to be desired. It’s a place where the surroundings promise so much, yet the culinary experience doesn’t quite match up.

Would we give it another try? Maybe, with some different dishes. And of course, every dining experience is unique, and what didn’t resonate with us might be a hit with others.

If your Disney World Epcot adventure leads you near the UK Pavilion, a stop at the neighboring Rosen Crown Pub for a drink might be worth your while. But when it comes to the Dining Room, you might want to skip this one.

Have you ever noticed the metal detectors near Grizzly River Run in California Adventure? It can be fun to people watch and speculate about how they get to use this secret entrance! But there’s actually a hotel back there, and this gate gets them in the park within a few steps from their rooms.

While I would love to tell you all about the Grand Californian Hotel at Disneyland Resort, it’s drastically out of my budget.

Good news though – you don’t have to be a resort guest to check it out. Enjoy all the amazing amenities and experiences offered at this resort, without the nightly price tag. From restaurants and bars to shops and good vibes, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Today, we’re talking about the GCH Craftsman Bar at Disney‘s Grand Californian.

Location and First Impressions at GCH Craftsman Bar

There’s a few ways to enter the hotel and access the bar. You can use the Super Secret Park entrance near Grizzly River run, the entrance in the middle of downtown Disney, or the entrance at the front of the hotel across from the Pixar Pier Hotel.

If you’re entering from Disneyland’s California Adventures, you’ll find yourself closest to the bar. Once inside the hotel, you’ll see signs guiding you to the Craftsman Grill, and right across from that walkway is the Craftsman Bar. It’s not a place you stumble upon easily unless you’re exploring the hotel, which is exactly what we were doing on this particular day.

A word of caution for the entrance from inside California Adventure (near Grizzly River Run): technically this entrance is exclusively for guests staying on property. However, this is only really upheld in the morning before and shortly after park open. If for some reason you are not permitted to re-enter the park at this gate, just exit through the gate to Downtown Disney and walk back to the main park entrance.

Atmosphere and Environment at GCH Craftsman Bar

Walking into this bar, I initially felt a little out of place since I wasn’t staying at the resort. However, I quickly realized that everyone is welcome.

There is sit-down dining available poolside with a reservation. As well, there is a bar that you can walk right up to, as long as there’s an available seat. Luckily for us, there were two seats.

The bar has a unique style and decor that reflects a signature craftsman aesthetic. The woodwork, dark-colored marble, and artisanal decor items create a cozy and inviting ambiance.

The seating area on the patio is covered with a beautiful wood trellis adorned with lush lilac vines. If I were staying at this hotel, I can easily imagine myself spending a lot of time in this delightful location.

But even if you’re not a hotel guest, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Menu Options at GCH Craftsman Bar

Now let’s talk about the menu options. The Craftsman Bar is a real table service dining location that offers a full menu, which is the same as the Craftsman Grill next door. You can order almost any item available at the Craftsman Grill here, but the unique aspect is that you can enjoy your meal outdoors. During our visit, we were not specifically looking for food as we had recently dined at Ballast Point in downtown Disney.

We were more interested in finding a place to relax and have a few drinks before heading back to the hotel for the evening. And drinks they had! The Craftsman Bar is a full-service bar offering more than 20 specialty cocktails and six non-alcoholic mocktails. Personally, I tend to prefer mocktails and non-alcoholic beverages at home, but since we were on vacation, I decided to indulge.

Watermelon Cucumber Collins

For my first drink, I opted for the watermelon cucumber collins, which is a classic Collins drink made with Tito’s handmade vodka, watermelon juice, cucumber, watermelon syrup, and lime juice. It was chilled and refreshing, although slightly less flavorful than I typically prefer. I would have liked a bit more watermelon taste.

Perhaps I should have requested an extra pump of syrup. Overall, it didn’t quite meet my expectations, but it was still enjoyable.

Pineapple Ginger Margarita

For my second drink, I decided to go for the Pineapple Ginger Margarita, and let me tell you, it definitely lived up to its name. As someone who has a weakness for well-made margaritas, I couldn’t resist. Although I should have learned by now that tequila can be a risky choice, this beverage did not disappoint. The flavor profile was a delightful mix of sour, acidic, and tangy notes, which paired perfectly with the Patron Silver tequila.

The addition of turmeric and ginger gave it a health-conscious twist. I enjoyed it immensely and would definitely order it again. Finishing this even faster than the Cucumber Collins, I’d give it a 10 out of 10.

Ginger Berry Cooler

My partner in crime for this trip opted for the Ginger Berry Cooler mocktail, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise. In fact, it might have been even better than my watermelon Collins. This mocktail is made with Ginger Beer, Cranberry Juice, Raspberry Pure and Lime Juice. The flavors remind me of a Moscow Mule but with the sweet and floral addition of the berries. Best drink here, hands down.

I really enjoyed this mocktail. It had a delightful sweetness from the pear, a tartness from the lemon, and the Rosemary added a unique earthy flavor that you don’t typically find in a cocktail. I must admit, though, that this might not be for everyone. As a big fan of Rosemary, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but others might have different preferences.

If the Rosemary pear spritz doesn’t appeal to you, don’t worry! The Craftsman Bar offers a wide range of other options to suit different tastes.

Final Thoughts and Recommendations

In conclusion, I believe we’ve overlooked the Craftsman Bar as a fan and a fandom for quite some time. It’s conveniently located near DCA and offers a much broader selection of drinks compared to what’s available in DCA itself. However, please note that you cannot bring these drinks into the park. The bar boasts a full specialty menu and an impressive mocktail menu, which always excites me.

Most of the drinks we tried were really good, although there was one that didn’t quite hit the mark for me. However, taste preferences can vary, so I believe it would be a huge hit for many others. I do regret not returning on another day to try their actual meals. They offer a plant-based option, the Forest Mushroom Impossible Sausage Pizza, which sounds delicious, and you can also enjoy the Grand Californian signature Carnitas Baked Nachos here.

Yes, I think we’ll definitely be coming back. So keep an eye out for a second review, where I’ll share my thoughts on the food and more experiences at this amazing location.
