Santa Claus will be visiting Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, once again! But, you can also submit your Christmas wishes at the Grand Californian, Disneyland Hotel, and Pixar Place Hotel.

The Fab Five will debut brand new holiday costumes with a retro Victorian vibe. Minnie and Daisy look like holiday elves, while Goofy might have just walked off of the Matterhorn!

From the life-sized gingerbread house at Disney‘s Grand Floridian Resort to the holiday train set at Disney‘s Yacht Club Resort, there’s a world of festive wonder waiting to be explored.

Special Touches Everywhere

What sets Disney apart are the intricate details. Known for its modern aesthetic, the Contemporary Resort features a unique Cinderella Castle gingerbread display, complete with characters from the beloved movie. The monorail passing through the resort with the backdrop of festive decorations offers a unique Disney holiday experience.

Disney’s Beach Club Resort

A highlight here is the life-sized, edible carousel. This rotating gingerbread carousel, complete with handcrafted horses and a signature scent of peppermint, is a marvel of craftsmanship and a testament to Disney‘s attention to detail. The Beach Club is one of my favorite resorts, and it shines even brighter this time of year!

Disney’s BoardWalk Inn

Evoking the charm of turn-of-the-century Atlantic City, the BoardWalk Inn boasts a delightful gingerbread display of the BoardWalk itself, complete with a miniature roller coaster.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

While not featuring gingerbread, the lodge is adorned with African-inspired decorations, making it a unique blend of cultural celebration and festive fun.

It may come as a surprise to many but there’s actually a holiday between Halloween and Christmas. I know, it’s crazy talk! But Thanksgiving, as it’s come to be known, is a little talked about holiday that has come to represent family and thankfulness.

I’m kidding! Of course, you know what Thanksgiving is! What comes to mind is probably turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce – oh my! But, have you ever thought of spending Thanksgiving at Walk Disney World?

Thanksgiving Day Crowds at Disney World

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days of the year at Disney parks.

Unfortunately, many folks have the same idea; that it’s a holiday so surely no-one will be there. That leads to higher than average crowds.

Big crowds don’t mean you won’t have a good time! I promise!

It just requires a bit more patience and planning.

Tips for Visiting Disney World on Thanksgiving Day

• Get up and get going early, I mean like rope drop early. Crowds are thinnest during the first 1-2 hours at any Disney park because most guests don’t want to be up early on vacation. It may be painful when the alarm goes off, but you can knock out most rides on your to-do list before lunch.
• Plan to do more than just rides. They’re great, sure, but there are so many limited time or single day attractions happening on Thanksgiving day! Parades, shows, holiday specials – that you won’t have an opportunity to see again unless you’re back the next year. Check out our Top Picks for Thanksgiving Day.
• Enjoy a late or Thanksgiving dinner, depending on your plans. If you’d like to see special day-time events book a late dinner. Those interested in night-time events are better off booking for early afternoon. Find out where to eat on Thanksgiving Day!
• Make good use of your FastPass+ It’s a very busy day for Disney. Once the crowds begin to fill the parks, you’ll likely see hour-long wait times for nearly everything. See the top FastPass picks by park!
• Have a plan. Yes, I say this about all Disney trips (hence the site name, guys!) But it’s especially important on a day like Thanksgiving. High crowds and a surplus of choices means it will be easy to miss (or forget) what you wanted to do or get irritated that you can’t do anything in a timely manner. What to Do and See on Thanksgiving Day

Disney offers amazing rides, shows, and entertainment every day of the year. But it gets even better during the holiday season and Thanksgiving day experiences it all. Here are some of the limited time attractions recommended for your Thanksgiving trip to Disney World.

• Holiday Decorations go up at Disney in early November. Enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells as you tour the parks
• Thanksgiving Parade of Bands is a super parade combining bands from more than 5 high schools around the United States. The parade takes place in Hollywood Studios and is a stunning showcase of collaboration.
• International Festival of the Holidays takes place each year in Epcot. You can try traditional holiday dishes from around the world and learn about other cultural celebrations.
• Candlelight Processional is the nighttime holiday event at Epcot featuring a rotating schedule of celebrities re-telling the traditional story of Christmas. Chita Rivera, of Broadway fame, is slated for Thanksgiving Day.
• Jingle Bell Jingle Bam is the holiday nighttime spectacle at Hollywood Studios. The magnificent show includes fireworks, lasers, music, and projection mapping technology. A must see presentation.

Where to Eat on Thanksgiving Day

We all know the best part of any trip to Disney is the spectacular food! From snacks to drinks, desserts, and dinner – there’s something you’re bound to love! Thanksgiving is no different! You can find turkey inspired treats at these locations:

• Liberty Tree Tavern in Magic Kingdom will be serving lunch and dinner.
• You can find lunch and dinner in Epcot at Akershus Royal Hall, Biergarten, Coral Reef, Le Cellier Steakhouse,  and the Rose & Crown Pub & Dining Room
• Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Sanna will offer reservations for lunch and dinner.
• The California Grill at Disney‘s Contemporary will serve Dinner
• Cape May Cafe at the Beach Club Resort will offer Dinner
• At Disney’s Wilderness Lodge the Whispering Canyon Cafe will be serving a family-style lunch and dinner
• Trail’s End at Fort Wilderness will have a buffet style lunch and dinner.
• Slightly off-site you can find Thanksgiving meals at Todd English’s Bluezoo and Garden Grove at the Swan & Dolphin hotels.
• If you can’t bring yourself to leave the parks and need a festive treat be sure to grab a Turkey Leg

Fastpasses are more important than ever on busy days at Disney World! The best time of day to schedule your ride reservations is mid-afternoon to early evening. Depending on your park of choice, here’s the Fastpass+ reservations to try and grab

Thanksgiving Day 2018 Itinerary*

Extra Magic Morning Hours are at Epcot on Thanksgiving day, from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm. Normally I’m in favor of using EMH, but based on the special event schedules I’m recommending that you stay clear.

I suggest rope dropping either Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom, whichever you have a stronger affinity towards. Fastpasses will be best utilized at Hollywood Studios.

Magic Kingdom

Disney’s Magic Kingdom will be decked out for the holidays and is home to some of the most iconic attractions. Crowds will likely be denser here than Animal Kingdom, as many will be out to see the decorations and classic rides. If this is your choice try rope dropping these rides.

• Seven Dwarves Mine Train
• Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
• Space Mountain
• Peter Pan

Animal Kingdom

While Animal Kingdom will not have nearly the same degree of holiday-themed decor as Magic Kingdom, there will be some. The crowds will be lesser than Magic Kingdom, which gives you an advantage to rope drop one of the most popular rides on property.

• Flight of Passage
• Kilimanjaro Safari
• Na’vi River Journey

Afternoon

You should be able to fit in 3-5 rides within the first 2 hours at either of these parks. Hop over to Epcot and enjoy lunch from one of the many offerings at the International Festival of holidays.

When you’re finished jump over to Hollywood Studios and use your fastpasses. Time allowing, you should be able to catch a portion of the Thanksgiving Parade of Bands. The parade begins at 2:00 pm, so try to book your fastpasses accordingly.

Evening

The Candlelight Processional at Epcot is one of the highest rated holiday events and my recommendation for nighttime entertainment. Dinner packages are available and highly recommended. Purchase of the Candlelight Processional Package guarantees you a seat to the event.

Reservations for the package are available until 5:30 pm, though they are quickly being booked. If you’re not able to reserve a package that fits your schedule try and book a late night dining reservation at one of the aforementioned locations.

Without the Candlelight Processional package, you will need to be diligent about getting your seat. Pick the performance time that best fits your plans (5:00 pm, 6:45 pm, or 8:15 pm) and arrive at least  30 minutes prior. Enjoy your late night meal after the show. Time permitting you can jump in line for 1-2 rides to round off the night.

• World of Color – Seasons of Light
  • From November 10^th through January 7^th, experience this unique show with a special holiday twist. World of Color is a worthwhile show all on it’s own, but it’s even better with a splash (pun intended) of holiday magic. Be sure to grab your fastpass to reserve a seat, or if you’d like to guarantee the perfect view Disney offers both a dinner and dessert party package.
• Christmas Fantasy Parade
  • Mickey, Minnie, and all their friends are done to the nines to celebrate the holiday spirit with you! Running twice daily, this parade is sure to put you and your family in a festive mood. Check out all your favorite characters, in their best ugly Christmas sweaters. Be sure to stay until the very end for a surprise visit from the man in red himself.
• Believe in Holiday Magic Fireworks
  • What could possibly be more classically Disney than a Fireworks spectacular at the end of a fun filled day? Well, it’s in November or December a bit of Christmas music may help it along. Plan ahead to snag a seat early, as this is one you will not want to miss.

Ride Layovers

• It’s a Small World Holiday
  • Small World is such an underrated attraction. It is one of the original Disneyland attractions, that Walt himself actually rode on – how could you possibly pass that up? This is one of my personal favorites, and it is somehow even better at Christmas time. From the abundance of dazzling lights on the façade, to the onslaught of holiday music from around the world – it is a must do for any holiday trip to Disneyland
• Haunted Mansion Holiday
  • Jack Skellington and his friends of decked the hallowed halls of the Haunted Mansion, for a unique holiday experience. This is yet another cannot miss holiday time treat that will certainly set your spirits high. The line can get rather long throughout the day, however, so I would highly recommend making this one of your first stops of the day.
    • Pro Tip: Jack and Sally make appearances in this area of the park throughout the day. Keep an eye open, as they don’t hang around long.

Atmosphere

• Disney Viva Navidad
  • New this year to the Disneyland resort is the Viva Navidad Street party at California Adventures. The parade is led by The Three Caballeros and filled with traditions of Latin America. Bright, colorful costumes and lively music are the hallmarks of this event that is sure to put some pep in your step.
• Holiday Time at Disneyland Tour
  • If you are able to squeeze it into your budget, I highly recommend the Holiday Tour. The cost is $85, but allows you to see behind the scenes how Disney creates the beautiful holiday magic. Worth every penny, and you will receive (2) limited edition holiday souvenirs
• Décor and Lights
  • The imagineers at Disney have been hard at work helping to create the magical twinkle of tinsel at every turn. In Disneyland Park you can see their handy work all along Main Street, and atop Sleeping Beauty’s snow caped castle. The whole park is decorated with millions of twinkling lights and Mickey shaped wreaths. The cous de grat however has to be the enormous Christmas Tree in the middle of town square. This is a great photo op for your family and friends.
  • Over at California Adventures, Raditor Springs has gone all out and are dressed for the occasion. Be sure to look for more décor in Hollywoodland, Paradise Pier and all throughout the park!

Halloween comes to Disneyland Resort September 15th. With so many classic and new experiences, there’s more than ever to see. Mickey pumpkins, and candy corn is plentiful and it might be a little difficult to figure out where to look first! As a Disneyland vet I’ve got the scoop. Everything you need to Know about Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort!

Main Street Decorations

The party starts before you even hit Main Street with character carved pumpkins overlooking the crowded gates below. All the classics characters are there, so be sure to take some time and spot your fave! Once you walk through those magical gates you’ll be greeted by a sea of orange!

The real showstopper is the giant carved Mickey pumpkin right in the middle of the town square. This is such an iconic photo opportunity for the parks, you simply can’t pass it up! Get there early though, because the line starts to back up pretty fast. You’ll also find some festive banners decorating the street lamps

Haunted Mansion Holiday

A fall trip to Disneyland wouldn’t be complete without a ride on Haunted Mansion Holiday where Jack Skellington has taken over those haunted halls. The line for this can get pretty ridiculous this time of year, often over 60 minutes. But the wait is well worth it, and there’s plenty to keep you entertained in line. There is no detail missed and no rock left unturned when it comes to Disney’s all out decorating of this classic attraction. It really is a show stopper and cannot be missed! I am so inspired by what Disney has done to create this overlay, I even created a few copycat DIY’s. (Be sure to sign up for the newsletter so you don’t miss those posts!)

My tip for beating the crowd is to make this one of your first stops of the day. There is a FastPass, but I’ve rarely seen it in use. Keep a look out for a special visit from HalloweenTown residents.

Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy

A relatively new addition to Disneyland’s Halloween line up is the Ghost Galaxy overlay at Space Mountain. The experience is not anywhere near as immersive as Mansion, but Space Mountain on it’s own is awesome so be sure to carve out some time. I highly recommend you try and snag a FastPass for this one, as the wait time will get pretty high. There are several jump scares and, well, a galaxy full of ghosts – so it may not be suited for younger kids. If you’re not sure, you can always use rider swap to see what it’s all about first.

Dia de los Muertos in Frontierland

An often underappreciated part of the festivities is the Dia de los Muertos overlay in Frontierland. The bulk of the action takes place right when you enter from the main hub. Here you can catch a festive mariachi band and some delicious sugar skull inspired treats. With Disney’s new movie Coco set to release this November, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few surprises in this area as well.

California Adventures

While there are always some decorations at DCA, it never really feels like Halloween – or even Fall (except for all the Pumpkin Spice Lattes). But this year, it looks like California Adventure is stepping up their game. Concept art for the park entrance posted on Disneyland’s site shows Oogie Boogie’s sinister silhouette overtop the turnstyles. I’ll be posting real life photos from my visit next month.

Carsland

The real surprise for Disneyland Halloween Time is in Carsland. The announcement came out from the D23 Expo that Lightening, Mater, and friends would be pulling out all the stop(lights)s. I absolutely love the spooky tire tower to the left in this image from the parks. But I think I’ve even more excited to see super hero Lightening and van-pire Mater! There will also be ride lay overs as Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters becomes Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree transforms into Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree.

I literally cannot wait to check out this area!! It looks like it will be decked to the nines, and now that Tower of Terror is gone, we really needed some spooky somewhere.

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is an AWSEOME after hours in park event. It requires a ticket all its own, but with it you’ll get to meet and greet with some of Disney’s best villains and trick or treat on Main Street! Check out this great article from Highlights Along the Way to learn more!
