Everyone loves a cozy-spooky movie when the leaves go crispy and the air smells like cinnamon, and Disney has some of our favorites. These aren’t slashers or mind-benders—we love those too—but this list is about nostalgic fun that maybe cost you a little sleep when you stayed up too late as a kid. Think pajama party with a lit candle and warm apple cider, gentle goosebumps, and a grin you can’t shake. We’ll count down from the least spooky to the most, so the vibes thicken as we go.

1) Toy Story of Terror! (2013, TV Special)

Bonnie’s toys are on a road trip when a flat tire strands them at a quiet roadside motel. One by one, toys start disappearing, and Jessie steps into the lead as the crew hunts for answers down humming vents and dim hallways. The mystery turns out to be more human than monster, which keeps the tone adventurous and kind.

But, Jessie’s panic in the box and her “take a breath, find your way” beat gives the special a little heart-thump. Combat Carl appears like a tiny action-hero pep talk and steals every scene he’s in. And the iguana chase through the motel’s back rooms feels like a theme-park cue: fast, funny, and just shadowy enough.

2) Under Wraps (1997, DCOM)

Marshall and his friends accidentally awaken a mummy then realize he needs to be back in his sarcophagus before Halloween ends, or he’ll be lost forever. “Harold” isn’t scary so much as confused—and weirdly sweet—which turns the story into a race against the clock with a lot of neighborhood sneaking. There’s a light thread of danger, thanks to shady adults who want the mummy for cash.

The supermarket sequence, with Harold wandering through fluorescent aisles and startling a fishmonger, lands as goofy perfection. As does the suburban stroll at night with streetlights smearing gold on his bandages while the kids whisper a plan. And the final hand-off at the tomb gives you that simple, satisfying “we did it” exhale.

3) Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire (2000, DCOM)

Siblings set their mom up with a handsome stranger, then realize he’s a vampire named Dimitri and scramble to save date night. A cheerful vampire hunter, Malachi Van Helsing, drops in with dramatic warnings and a few old-school tricks, giving the movie a comic-book rhythm. The plot zips from living room to mansion with a wink, never losing its playful pulse.

Memorable beats include the mirror “test” at a grocery store and Dimitri’s smooth entrance into that candlelit house, all cape and confidence. But if that’s not enough to peke your interest, our love interests are played by Caroline Rhea (Aunt Hilda on Sabrina the Teenage Witch), and Charles Shaughnessy (who plays Mr. Sheffield on The Nanny)! Talk about 90’s romcom royalty!

4) Twitches (2005, DCOM)

On their 21st birthday, twins Camryn and Alex discover they are twin witches (get it? twitches…) from Coventry, a parallel realm under threat from the Darkness. Guardians Karsh and Ileana crash into their very normal day, and the sisters learn to fuse glittery gifts with real courage. Family history grounds the magic, which keeps the story warm even when clouds gather.

This slightly campy but heart driven films is quintessential nostalgia bait for us Millennials, and filled the hole in our hearts from the loss of Sister, Sister. It’s definately time to bring this magic to the next generation.

5) Phantom of the Megaplex (2000, DCOM)

Pete Riley runs a massive theater and preps for a star-studded premiere when a masked saboteur turns the building into a maze of mishaps. Projectors stall, posters fall, and a midnight movie starts to look cursed.

Between a popcorn avalanche in the lobby, a air-duct scramble past whirring fans, and the reveal behind the mask in a tangle of ropes and curtains. The “phantom” mystery is more prank than peril, but the backstage bustle gives it momentum. The climax cleverly uses the theater’s own tools—lights, sound, timing—to unmask the culprit. It’s a love letter to movie houses wrapped in a Scooby-do-ish bow.

6) Frankenweenie (2012, Theatrical)

Victor, a quiet kid with a big heart, loses his dog Sparky and does the most Tim Burton thing possible: he brings him back with science and lightning. The experiment works, but curious classmates try to copy it with their own pets, and the town finds itself overrun by well-intended monsters. It’s sweet first, spooky second, and unabashedly in love with old creature features.

It’s basically the Kid’s Bop version of Stephen King’s Pet Semetery, which became nightmare fuel for years for many of us. Frankenweenie adds a playful spin on the concept with all the hallmarks of a Tim Burton film with stop-motion animation drenched in the blue grey tones of an October icon.

7) The Haunted Mansion (2023, Theatrical)

Gabbie and her son, Travis, move into a grand New Orleans mansion that refuses to be quiet, and recruit a ragtag crew. A grief-struck scientist named Ben, a very chatty psychic named Harriet, an overeager priest, and a cranky historian. All to figure out why the dead won’t mind their own business. The mystery threads through the home’s past and a powerful spirit known as the Hatbox Ghost, who’s been nudging events from the shadows. The house is home to 999 haunts, and the Hatbox Ghost is looking for one more.

This 2023 version was a huge improvement on the original 2003, which let’s be honest was a rush job they pushed because Pirates of the Caribbean had done so well. In this film we get all of the ride call back like the stretching portraits, Madam Leoda, and an actually worthwhile graveyard scene. It’s far from scary but there are a few moments of tension that pull you into the action.

8) Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge (2001, DCOM)

Marnie’s rival steals a magical spell and targets both the human and the creature worlds. Turning creators into gray, expressionless versions of themselves. While the Halloween costumed humans become what they’re wearing.

The Cromwells ping-pong between Halloweentown and the mortal world, chasing clues and patching magic on the fly. It’s brighter than scary, but it does have witches so it counts!

9) Tower of Terror (1997, DCOM)

Reporter Buzzy Crocker and his niece crack a decades-old case at the Hollywood Tower Hotel, where five elevator passengers vanished during a storm in 1939. The mystery isn’t just who disappeared, but why, and the answer threads through vanity, jealousy, and a botched spell. The hotel itself is the star—paused mid-evening, waiting for a bell that never rings.

The re-creation of the grand lobby, dust thick on velvet ropes and folded menus, with a ghostly gala flickering at the edge of sight is straight from the Hollywood Studios attraction.. When past and present finally meet, the hotel loosens its grip.

10) Mr. Boogedy (1986, TV Movie)

The Davis family moves to Lucifer Falls, where a caped Pilgrim ghost—Mr. Boogedy—haunts their bargain house with green light and bad manners. The town curmudgeon tells a tragic backstory involving a cursed cloak and a kidnapped child, and the family decides to fight back using equal parts courage and slapstick. It’s wonderfully odd, with practical gags that feel like a haunted-house kit.

The vacuum duel with a stubborn spirit is peak eighties TV chaos. And so is the portrait that turns its head and the living-room storm of indoor wind and fog. When the cloak finally flies and the glow drops, you get that “we actually did it” grin.

11) Bride of Boogedy (1987, TV Movie)

Boogedy isn’t finished; he wants a bride, and his attention lands on mom. The town’s festival becomes the stage for a louder, stranger return, with masks, fireworks, and a tug-of-war over that cursed cloak. The sequel dials everything up, which is part of the fun.

12) Don’t Look Under the Bed (1999, DCOM)

Frances Bacon McCausland has pranks happening all over town and an “imaginary friend” named Larry insisting something worse is coming. The Boogeyman feeds on fear and neglect, twisting Larry himself as Frances pushes childhood away too fast. What starts as an oddball comedy slides toward a real, monster story.

The crawlspace world of “under the bed,” where furniture hangs like stalactites and rules feel wrong, gives the movie its bite. And gave me plenty of sleepless nights.

13) The Watcher in the Woods (1980, Theatrical)

A family rents a house beside a restless forest, and the landowner’s missing daughter lingers over everything. Jan starts seeing flashes in glass and water, while her sister hears names backward and bells that no one rings. The mystery points to an old ceremony that went terribly wrong.

Images carry this one: “NERAK” breathed onto a fogged window, a blindfold in a candlelit ruin, and a mirror that shows what shouldn’t be there. Mrs. Aylwood’s voice cuts like a twig snapping in quiet, and the woods feel like they’re listening. When the answer arrives, it hums more than it shouts.

14) Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983, Theatrical)

Mr. Dark’s carnival rolls in after the wind changes, promising to give townspeople the one thing they want most. Will and Jim see the price hiding in the shadows, and Will’s father, Charles, has to face his own ache for time that’s already gone. The story moves like October weather—bright one minute, thunder under the next.

The library scene where Mr. Dark lays a hand across Charles’s chest and flips through his life like a book is unforgettable. So is the carousel spinning time backward, horses groaning as mirrors warp. The spider storm in the bedroom is pure nightmare logic: simple, sticky, and inescapable until courage cracks it.

15) Return to Oz (1985, Theatrical)

At the top of our list is Return to Oz, which still has a high creep factor to this day. Dorothy returns to a ruined Emerald City, where stone citizens stare and the yellow brick road lies in pieces. She picks up some new friends that honestly feel like a fever dream.

Tik-Tok, a clockwork tin soldier, a lanky Jack Pumpkinhead (which absolutely has to be the inspiration for Jack Skellington), and a sofa-creature named the Gump. He’s literally a sofa that comes to life. They try to outwit the Nome King while avoiding the Wheelers who rattle down empty streets. And let’s not even talk about Princess Mombi’s hall of living heads.

Final thoughts

Disney’s cozy-spooky catalog isn’t always out to terrify. But it’s here to stir that little thrill we remember and to share it with people who get it. Each of these movies brings a few moments you can still picture when the credits fade, and that’s the magic.

Disney villains aren’t just scary; they’re stylish, theatrical, and unforgettable. Some roast whole kingdoms like marshmallows over a campfire. While others work slowly, spoiling one life drop by drop until the light goes out. So today, we’re ranking who’s really the worst.

We’re also bringing a grown-up lens to our childhood faves. As kids, the princess was right and the villain was wrong, end of story. As adults, we see contracts, power moves, and red flags the size of Cinderella Castle. We still love the magic, but we recognize the mess. Ariel, a quick skim of that contract would have saved, well, everything.

Our ranking might ruffle some feathers because your fave might land lower than your heart wants. That’s half the fun and why comment sections exist. Use this list to spark a friendly debate in the queue or at the kitchen table.

12) Yzma (The Emperor’s New Groove)

Yzma is office politics with a lab coat and a flair for purple. She wants Kuzco gone, not because she has a vision, but because he’s in her way. She prefers potions and traps to swords and armies, which keeps the damage smaller and the drama louder. She’s the kind of villain who files an evil plan under “miscellaneous.” Dangerous? Absolutely. World-ending? Not quite.

Her plans create llamas instead of body counts, which is funny until you remember she wanted the opposite. Intent matters, and hers is plenty dark even when the execution wobbles. He mirrors Anna’s hopes back at her like a funhouse reflection, warm on the surface and warped underneath. When the mask drops, it drops fast, and the temperature with it. This is neglect as a weapon and kindness as bait.

What makes Hans stick is the way he narrates his scheme like it’s a to-do list. He doesn’t rage; he calculates. Which feels far too real outside the movie screen. People become steps on a staircase he intends to climb in record time. And he almost gets there, until a sister’s love rewrites the story.

10) Lady Tremaine (Cinderella)

Lady Tremaine cruelty towards Cinderella is undeniable, though easily overlooked by characters outside of her bubble. Her treatment of the titular character starts with menial labor, but rises to complete disrespect as we learn Cinderella’s name comes from her family making fun of her and the chores they force her to complete.

She neglects her own stepdaughter, child of the man she supposedly loved, leaving her in a cold cellar with the family scraps. Even then, when they realize she has used them to make something beautiful they claw them back. Lady Tremaine then mocks Cinderella, telling her she can go to the ball after completely a seemingly impossible list of chores. Then locking her away when the prince later comes to find his culmsy mystery date. Diabolical.

9) Queen of Hearts (Alice in Wonderland)

he Queen of Hearts rules by fear and impulse. In a world where rials are performance, and the verdict is decided in advance. People lose their heads because she’s angry, not because of guilt. Her court exists to serve her temper.

This is loud, public harm. She encourages loyalty through threats, not trust. Curiosity is punished and flattery is rewarded. That climate keeps everyone unsafe, but especially Alice.

8) Dr. Facilier (The Princess and the Frog)

Magic always comes at a price, but Dr. Facilier sells help that costs more than it gives. He reads fears then offers shortcuts with a hidden price. He uses people to reach power in New Orleans, and when the debt comes due, he lets others pay it.

His plan affects both individuals and a whole city. He lies with a smile and enjoys the control, treating souls like currency to close the deal. Scale and intent move him up this list.

7) Gaston (Beauty and the Beast)

Some architypes never change, like Gaston who cannot accept the word “no.” After spending much of the film flouncing about the village touting his completely unearned reputation. He finally hears Belle and turns that rejection into a campaign to spread fear. He incites a mob with fear of the unknown, leads them to the castle doors, and orders an attack. Little does he or anyone realize the occupants are priosners to a curse.

His harm is built on an ego that can’t be tamed and unwarranted attention. And that doesn’t even touch on the resource hoarding – 12 eggs for breakfast?! No one needs that much protein. He tells the town they are brave for fighting the Beast, when all he’s really doing is pushing hate. But the crowd follows because he flatters them first. That mix of influence and violence earns this spot.

6) The Evil Queen (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs)

She’s a mirror’s worst nightmare. The Evil Queen asks a simple question and when she doesn’t like the answer, chooses murder over self-reflection. She literally orders Snow White’s heart in a box like it’s an Uber Eats delivery. When that doesn’t work, she weaponizes one of the most widely acceptable and enjoyed fruit. Complete propaganda!

Her rule depends on being first, best, and only. So, when the mirror says otherwise, she doesn’t raise her game; she ends the competition. All Snow White ever did was exist, but for The Evil Queen even existing is an insult.

5) Ursula (The Little Mermaid)

As a master of “that seems fair, she spots a desperate teenager and designs a deal disguised as hope. Ursula lures Ariel into the trap with empathy and understanding – of course it’s really love, King Triton doesn’t know what he’s talking about! And as our mermaid friend shares her struggles this evil octopus tricks her into signing away her voice, her power in this vast existence, for a fresh crush.

Yes, Ariel should have read the contract, but the fine print is loaded like a game of rigged ring toss, and Ursula knows exactly which prize Ariel wants. When the plan wobbles, she scales up from ink to sea monster in the blink of an eye. It’s this feels-real escalation when she doesn’t get what she wants, and exploitation of Ariels trusting nature that lands her at number 5 on our list.

4) Hades (Hercules)

Hades wants one thing: Zeus off the throne and Olympus under his control. And the only obstacle is a future hero named Hercules. When a plan to strip him of his godhood as a baby fails, Hades realizes he’ll have to go another route.

Enter Meg, whose soul he controls, to lure Hercules into traps. From poisoning a literal child to weaponizing true love, Hades is locked in on his plan for revenge. He holds Meg’s past mistake over her head and calls it a contract. He breaks his word the moment it suits him and aims for mass takeover. The goal, the methods, and the cost to everyone else meet the definition of “super evil.”

3) Scar (The Lion King)

The goal is simple, get the crown. Scar resents Mufasa’s strength and the respect he gets. So, when Simba is born, Scar sees his chances drop to almost nothing.

He builds an alliance with the hyenas and promises them food. He places Simba in the gorge and triggers a wildebeest stampede. Forcing Simba to watch his own father’s death, and then blames him for it. Scar takes the throne and gives the hyenas free reign. Destorying the hunting lands.

He’s beyond evil because he mixes murder with manipulation. He kills his brother, targets a child, and lies to everyone. His rule brings hunger and fear, and he shows no remorse. He risks the entire pride to protect his ego and power. Even at the end, he blames others rather than take responsibility. The Hyena song does still slaps though.

2) Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty)

Maleficent takes a party snub and turns it into a generational curse. The commitment to the bit is, frankly, impressive. She stalks the calendar like a cat, anxiously awaiting the exact day when doom arrives. And when the heroes get bold, she gets bigger, greener, and much… more on fire. Elegance meets escalation, and nobody forgets the show.

Her villainy works because she knows timing and theater. She doesn’t just cast a spell; she curates an event. Honestly, she’s the original event planner. She demands respect and delivers consequences when it’s not offered. On a different day, she’d be a great stage manager; on this day, she is a dragon.

1) Judge Claude Frollo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)

And finally, our number-one most evil villain—by far—is Judge Claude Frollo. Partly because he’s a flawed human who reads like someone you could meet on the street, the scariest kind of bad guy. And partly because he does terrible things while insisting he is the hero of the story. He uses titles and rules to make harsh choices feel tidy, then doubles down when anyone gets hurt. He’ isn’t a ‘s not a lightning storm; he’s a steady, scorching heat.

Frollo’s danger is scale mixed with certainty. He decides who belongs and who doesn’t, then acts like it’s maintenance. He sets fires he calls “order,” and when people are burned, he blames the spark, never the match. The songs soar, the cathedral shines, and his choices keep getting darker. That gap between image and action is why he lands here at the top.

Disney has some of the most memorable villains, who taught us right from wrong at an early age. And some of them have made a pretty strong case for themselves in recent years (not Scar), with the live action re-tellings. With a new Villains show at Hollywood Studios, and complete Villains Land coming to Magic Kingdom (take that Epic Dark Universe), one thing is certain – we really love a misguided misfit.

Main Street is a glow in pumpkin-lit perfection as the giant Mickey jack-o’-lantern returns for Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort. And my oh my! Do they know how to hit the perfect balance of cozy fall vibes and sparkling spookiness.

The season this year from runs August 22–October 31, 2025, with Plaza de la Familia continuing at Disney California Adventure through November 2. It’s my absolute favorite time of year at (arguably) my favorite Disney park.

What’s new (and what’s back) in 2025

These headliners are the ones you’re bound to plan the day around. We’ve got classic ride overlays including: Haunted Mansion Holiday – come see how Jack has wrecked the mansions halls and this year’s gingerbread house design, Monster’s After Dark – as the sun begins to set Guardians of the Galaxy brings to life a new adventure where you and Rocket team up to rescue the crew after the collector’s monsters have been unleashed, and Radiator Screams – both Mater’s JamBOOree and Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-o-Ween and some more seasonal charm to Cars Land (which is decorated to the nines!)

Halloween Screams

The Halloween Screams is also back, thank goodness, with nightly projection shows. Fireworks are limited to Friday – Sunday, this year. However, don’t be surprised if the fireworks specifically are canceled on any given night.

Since Disneyland is located so tightly amongst the Anaheim neighborhood (there are houses less than 3 blocks from the gates), the pyro schedule is subject to local noise ordinances. As well, with homes just a stone’s throw away Fireworks cannot be launched when there is any increased potential for wind to pick up the sparks. In Southern California we have Santa Annas, strong warm winds, throughout much of September and October.

How do I check my nights?

Open the Disneyland app or the Disneyland website’s Calendar/Entertainment page. Select your date, filter for Disneyland Park, and look for “Halloween Screams.”

The listing will explicitly note “with Fireworks” or “with Projections,” plus showtime (often around 9:30 p.m.). Double-check again day-of for weather impact or operational changes.

Why do people love it?

Because it feels like a storybook of spooky Disney. You’ll hear “Grim Grinning Ghosts,” “This Is Halloween,” and villain medleys while Zero (Jack’s ghost pup) makes a magical flight overhead—one of those gasp-and-point moments that lives rent-free in your camera roll. Projections ripple across Sleeping Beauty Castle and Main Street, turning the whole hub into a theater. The combo of nostalgia, music, and just-right mischief is the heart of Halloween Time.

Where to watch

If fireworks are scheduled, the Central Plaza (hub) gives you the full castle canvas. For a little more elbow room, Rivers of America often features show projections with a great vibe, and crowd flow is gentler than the hub. Arrive early on fireworks nights; on projection nights you can slide in later and still have a lovely view. (All showtimes and locations subject to change.)

Haunted Mansion Holiday

“Nightmare Before Christmas” overlays the Mansion with pumpkin patch glamour, peppermint swirls, and that gingerbread-house scent in the ballroom that screams “it’s fall! Like, right now!” Lines spike fast, so if it’s a must-do, aim for rope drop or circle back near park close when lines usually slow. Evening rides add extra mood as New Orleans Square settles into shadow and lantern light.

Disney California Adventure Highlights

Cars Land is peak “cute Halloween.” Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree and Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween layer silly songs and cobwebby charm over gentle rides—perfect palette cleansers between big thrills. Stay put when the sun starts to set for the Cars Land lighting ceremony with a seasonal twist.

As twilight hits, steer toward Avengers Campus: Monsters After Dark jolts the evening alive with crunchy guitar riffs and a zippy rescue plotline that makes even non-thrill-seekers grin once they’ve done it.

If you’ve got little kids, save a daytime pocket for Mickey’s Trick and Treat in the Disney Theater. It’s a sit-down, interactive show that keeps kids engaged, gives grown-ups a break, and sends you back into the park with high spirits. Think giggles, not jump-scares. Just know that it is floor seating, and they sing a song called “I Want Candy” (not the one you’re thinking of). Then pass-out a health snack when you exit. So many tears.

Oogie Boogie Bash 2025

On select nights from August 17 to October 31, Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party takes over DCA. The party runs 6:00–11:00 p.m. with mix-in entry at 3:00 p.m., so you get extra park time before the lights go moody. Tickets include unlimited PhotoPass downloads during the event, the Frightfully Fun Parade (7:45 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. showings most nights), immersive Treat Trails, and the dreamlike Villains Grove walk-through. Costumes are welcome—just follow Disney’s guidelines.

Why people love it

Rarer villains, shorter waits on some attractions, and that “it’s our night” after-hours buzz you can’t replicate. If your group is heavy on characters and candy hauls, it is a fantastic splurge. But, with all that Disneyland resort has to offer with a regular park ticket I struggle to justify the cost.

Even if you’re not attending though, California Adventure is still a good bet during the day on party nights. Most guests avoid the park, since it closes early but the daytime ticket is the same price. Which means it’s pretty empty. I tried to film a Lightning Lane challenge in DCA last year, but mistakenly scheduled it for a party day and managed to knock out every ride within about four hours.

Plaza de la Familia (Aug 22–Nov 2)

Disneyland Halloween Foods for 2025

This year food offerings at the resort are stacked!. At Alien Pizza Planet, the Haunted Heatwave Pizza brings spiced blush sauce, cupped pepperoni, sausage, smoked bratwurst, red Fresno chiles, and a hot-honey finish.

The Spicy Blush Pasta hits the cozy-plus-zing lane if you’re team-fork. We like sharing plates so you can taste more and avoid the 3 p.m. crash.

Collectors, plan your hunt. A Cars Land Lighted Cone Sipper drops Aug 22, Mickey Mouse Ghost Bucket lands Sept 10, and Kuzco’s Poison Bottle Glow Cube arrives Aug 22 with a Magic Key Kuzco Poison Sipper on Aug 17.

Build everything else around those anchors and treat the rest as bonus magic. If you’re skipping Oogie Boogie Bash, choose a non-party night at DCA for longer evening hours. Use mobile order for high-demand snacks and novelties.

If your goal is breathing room, plan for late-August or early-September weekdays. You’ll swap a little heat for shorter lines and more space to wander. As Halloween weekend approaches, the energy gets buzzy and crowds get big. Neither is wrong; just decide your vibe and plan toward it.

Halloween at Walt Disney World might look a bit different than you’d expect. The parks are well known for holiday celebrations and the infamous rotation of Epcot festivals. But, most of the big “spooky” moments of fall live inside Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. A paid, limited capacity event at Magic Kingdom. Outside of that, offerings are pretty light.

Now, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a festive trip. It just means you need a bit of a plan. September is a sweet spot for visits with lower crowds, party dates, after hour events and EPCOT’s Food & Wine running. There’s no shortage of things to do and see, it just may not all come with jack-o-lanterns and candy.

Don’t worry, there are tons of treats still.

How Halloween Works at Walt Disney World

Across the resort, the season shows up in three main ways: décor pockets, rotating snacks and drinks, and a heavy merch push. Magic Kingdom carries the most visible daytime décor along Main Street, while EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, Disney Springs, and the resorts add a much lighter touch

The real seasonal draw is Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom. Exclusive parade, fireworks, trick-or-treating, and ride overlays live inside the event. It’s definately a lot of fun, and we go into all the details in our annual MNSSHP Guide. For day guests and non-party nights, think “fall flavor” more than “full Halloween takeover.”

Magic Kingdom During the Day

Magic Kingdom feels the most seasonal of all the parks even during the day without party tickets. The heart of decor is Main Street; covered in carved pumpkins on balconies and ledges. Scan the windows for tiny gags and themed displays. And don’t miss my personal favorite – the pumpkin people of Main Street.

Treats change each year, but you can count on at least a few Halloween-leaning sweets and sips. Seasonal sundaes, specialty cold brews, and a spicy-sweet Dole Whip option to kicks up the heat! Most of the specialty food items have a spooky theme, feature a classic fall ingredient, or an unexcepted spice.

Sadly, there are no Halloween fireworks or Halloween parade outside of the party. But you can still sneak a peak of the fireworks from outside of Magic Kingdom – more on that below.

EPCOT in the Fall

EPCOT isn’t “Halloween” forward, but it pairs well with the season. EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival runs through the fall, bringing evening energy and plenty of bites. Many of which feature festive fall flavors. If you want a little more themed fun with low effort, try Pluto’s Pumpkin Pursuit.

A Halloween inspired scavenger hunt around World Showcase and nearby areas. Purchase your map at most gift shops around the park, find the character pumpkins, and collect a small prize.

Hollywood Studios Halloween Touches

The marquee seasonal piece at Hollywood Studios is Minnie’s Halloween Dine at Hollywood & Vine, where characters appear in fall-themed looks. This is an ideal for families looking to meet characters with a (not so spooky) twist. It’s not our favorite dining location on property, or even at Hollywood Studios, but it’s a fun experience and if you love a good character meal – this is for you.

Animal Kingdom in October

Animal Kingdom has the lightest Halloween footprint. That’s not a bad thing. It can be a restful park day in the middle of a busy trip. Enjoy cooler mornings, abundant shade, and animal trails. Some of the animals may receive pumpkin treats for enrichment around the season, which is a cute nod if you happen to catch it.

Because the park often closes earlier than the others, it’s a great opportunity to spend the evening on some non-park activities. Or catch the Halloween Party fireworks from a secret lookout!

Disney Springs After Dark

Disney Springs is your flexible, low-stress seasonal hub. Several spots rotate in Halloween desserts and sips. It’s easy to sample one or two, browse the stores, and find seasonal merch to your hearts desire. Or until your credit card declines, as the case may be. If you’re hunting for a specific pair of ears or a coveted Mickey Halloween Wreath, you’re in the right spot.

Use Disney Springs on your non-park night or after an early-close park like Animal Kingdom. Parking is free, live music is common, and the vibe is lively without the ride-chasing pressure.

Make-Your-Own Halloween Fun

Even though Disney World may not go full out for spooky season, you can still create a great Halloween evening without entering the party.

Watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks from outside the park

You can see the show from several spots around Seven Seas Lagoon. The Transportation & Ticket Center offers a wide view with easy exits after. The Polynesian Village Resort beach is a favorite for the atmosphere; music is often piped in, and you can grab a Dole Whip at Pineapple Lanai beforehand. And they even have a Pumpkin Spice Flavor!

At Disney’s Contemporary Resort, book California Grill at any time of day and bring your receipt to use the observation deck. You won’t see the castle projections from these locations. But the fireworks and music still feel special and very “Halloween at Disney.” Plan to arrive early, expect some resort parking limits, and use monorails or boats as needed. This one is not for the timid or those afraid of heights!

Lean into Disney-Inspired Outfits

Since adults can’t wear costumes during the day, use color stories and character-adjacent looks. Sometimes known as Disneybounding.

Go Ursula-inspired with a black tennis dress and a violet cardigan.
Add a gold shell pendant, black sneakers, and a bold red lip. Or think Hades-inspired with charcoal bottoms, a smoky gray top, and a teal overshirt or scarf.
Add black sneakers, an electric-blue hat or scrunchie, a skull pin or chain, and cool-toned makeup.

Resorts Round-Up

Honestly, resorts are such an under represented destination on a Disney World trip. Most guests are focused on in-park activities like rides and shows. But there is so much to do around Disney, even without a park ticket.

Most resorts add small touches for Halloween, rather than full events. You’ll often find Movies Under the Stars with seasonal picks, a craft or two, and light décor. As well as a seasonal sweet treat.

Ask at your resort’s recreation desk what’s on during your stay. It changes, and times can shift with weather.

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground deserves a full detour if you like home-grown festivities. Guests staying here decorate campsites and cabins, and you’ll often see creative golf cart designs cruising the loops near Halloween.

There’s actually a golf cart parade and a campsite decorating contest close to the holiday. There are some ingenious golf cart designs! In recent years, restrictions have tightened up due to the popularity and only campground guests are allowed in for most of October. Book early if you’d like to be part of the festivities!

In past seasons, Fort Wilderness also offered Return to Sleepy Hollow, a special experience with the Headless Horseman. It hasn’t run for several years, but we’re holding out hope it returns!

When to go

September is the best balance of crowds, weather trends, and event layering. Early October stays workable. Halloween week gets insane. If your dates are fixed, build in more buffer time and avoid “must do everything” thinking.

How to use party days without party tickets

Magic Kingdom closes early on party nights, so many guests avoid the park altogether for the day. Use those mornings for a low-crowd experience: rope drop, stack two to three headliners, enjoy a snack, and then hop to another park or move toward your fireworks viewing plan. It turns what could be a short day into a strategic win.

Reservations and logistics

If you want Minnie’s seasonal dine, book Hollywood & Vine early. For Pluto’s Pumpkin Pursuit, pick up your map when you arrive at EPCOT so you can slot it where it fits. For lagoon fireworks, give yourself travel padding. Boats and monorails can stack up after the show. If you plan a dinner at California Grill, request a time near fireworks, but know seating is not guaranteed for the exact window.

Weather and comfort

We’ve known for a while that something big was coming to this part of the park—Disney shared long-range plans at D23 last year—but this is the first time we’ve seen concept art, heard the name, and been given a timeline. And the timeline is fast.

We’re Gaining Piston Peak, But Losing a Core Piece of Magic Kingdom

Piston Peak looks incredible. It’s rugged and scenic, styled after a national park in the American West. The land will feature a high-energy off-road rally ride with trackless vehicles racing through geysers, red rock cliffs, and waterfalls. It’s a departure from the polished nostalgia of Cars Land, and something that will bring real scale and visual drama to the back half of Magic Kingdom.

But to make room for it, Disney is clearing out one of the park’s most iconic spaces.

The Liberty Belle Riverboat has been circling the Rivers of America since 1973, offering a peaceful ride through trees, past old fort structures, and alongside the park’s last big stretches of undeveloped shoreline. It wasn’t thrilling, but it was magic in the quietest way—steam rising off the engine, the bell echoing over the treetops, and families leaning on the railing, just taking it all in.

Tom Sawyer Island was one of the last places kids could really explore. They sprinted across bouncing barrel bridges, ducked into caves, scrambled through the fort, and vanished into corners of the park that felt wild and unscripted. It was messy, and loud, and full of laughter echoing off the trees. You couldn’t mobile order it. You couldn’t Lightning Lane it. It was something you found—and claimed.

Disney is calling this expansion the biggest change to Magic Kingdom since New Fantasyland. That’s true. But it’s also the biggest removal of opening-era atmosphere the park has ever seen.

What the Concept Art Tells Us About the New Land

Now that we’ve seen the concept art for Piston Peak National Park, we finally have something to dig into—and while Disney hasn’t confirmed many details, there’s a lot we can glean just by looking closely.

For starters: it looks like they’re not filling in the entire river. The front section, including the current Liberty Belle dock, is still there. And that’s a big deal. If that river stays, there’s a real chance the Liberty Belle sticks around too—maybe not sailing in circles, but parked permanently as a set piece, a scenic corner, or even home to something new. A Tiana meet and greet with the bayou cliffs in the background? That’s the kind of vibe this space could absolutely deliver.

The main ride—the off-road rally Disney teased—is all over the right side of the land. You can clearly trace the ride path as it winds through rocky formations, skims past waterfalls, and punches right through clusters of erupting geysers. It’s big. It’s bold. And it’s built for visual drama. This isn’t tucked into a back corner—it is the back corner.

Just past the entrance, right in the center of the land, is a set of ranger station-style buildings, all pitched roofs and forest green details. It feels like the heart of the story, and likely where the main queue kicks off. Behind that is a round fenced area, which could be anything from a setpiece to a staging zone for the ride. It’s probably not another attraction, but it’s clearly part of the layout in a meaningful way.

But what really stands out is the giant hollowed-out tree stump tucked into the center-left of the land. It’s got visible pathways leading up to it and seems to have a full footprint to itself—which makes it a strong contender for the land’s second attraction.

It doesn’t scream thrill ride. It feels slower, more story-based. Maybe a small theater show, maybe interactive. Something with characters. It’s hard to say for sure, but it’s unique—and in a land that’s otherwise dominated by vehicle tracks, this could be where the storytelling slows down a bit.

There’s no obvious second ride track, no rollercoaster tucked behind a mountain, no clear showbuilding for a high-capacity dark ride. So this might not be a headliner, but it looks intentional—and if the design matches the rest of the land, it could still be something special.

All of this is guesswork, of course. But what we’re seeing here isn’t just a rushed IP overlay or a flat expansion shoved into leftover space. Piston Peak looks layered. It looks big. And if it delivers on what this artwork is suggesting, it could become one of the most visually immersive lands Disney has built in years.

Big Changes Are Happening Across Walt Disney World

Magic Kingdom isn’t the only part of the resort in motion.

Tomorrow, June 7, marks the final day of Muppet*Vision 3D at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The show—Jim Henson’s final project—will close as Disney prepares to transform Grand Avenue into a Monsters, Inc. themed area. While we’re hopeful the Muppets will find a new home, for now, it’s goodbye.

At Animal Kingdom, plans continue to move forward on Tropical Americas, which will replace DinoLand U.S.A. The new area will feature Encanto and Indiana Jones, with a retheme of the existing DINOSAUR ride expected. The carnival games and dino-themed play area are no more, and this new direction will shift the park’s tone toward IP-driven experiences.

And Over at Disneyland…

The changes aren’t limited to Florida. This week, Disneyland Resort announced the upcoming closure of Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! at California Adventure, which will make way for a full Avatar-themed land. The project is expected to break ground soon and open in phases.

Disney also confirmed the first-ever Coco attraction, coming to Pixar Pier, and revealed plans for a 6,000-space parking structure to accommodate the expected increase in attendance as the resort expands.

Both coasts are in motion. Big IP. Big environments. Big turnover.

For many, this quiet little dark ride tucked into the Hollywood Backlot of Disney California Adventure wasn’t just a place to cool off or escape the crowds—it was a core memory. And now, it’s the first domino to fall in what appears to be a sweeping overhaul of the Disneyland Resort as part of the DisneylandForward expansion.

Let’s be clear: we’re thrilled that new stories are coming to life. But it’s hard not to feel like a bit of the park’s soul is being chipped away, one original experience at a time. And the closure of Monsters, Inc.—just days before MuppetVision 3D* is set to close over at Walt Disney World—is a one-two punch to the nostalgic gut.

The End of Monstropolis

Originally opening in January 2006, Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! was itself a resurrection—built atop the spectacular failure that was Superstar Limo.

The transformation into Monstropolis was both clever and charming, with impressive physical sets, Roz’s iconic sarcasm, and a storyline that actually made use of the characters we love. It was one of the rare dark rides in California Adventure with a rich narrative and a little bit of heart—and it was often one of the few kid-friendly attractions with a consistently low wait time.

Its location in Hollywood Land made it feel like a secret corner of the park—a liminal space between the glitz of Avengers Campus and the hubbub of the Animation Academy. And now, as part of the expansion plans for DisneylandForward, that entire section of the park is being eyed for transformation.

The Monsters are moving out. Pandora is moving in.

And here’s the twist: just as Monsters, Inc. is being removed from California Adventure, it’s reportedly being added to Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World. Following the closure of MuppetVision 3D*, Disney is said to be building an entirely new Monsters, Inc. mini-land, centered around a suspension coaster themed to the iconic door warehouse scene. It’s wild, honestly.

On one coast, Monstropolis fades into memory. On the other, it’s coming to life in what could be one of Disney’s most kinetic, visually striking coasters to date.

It’s a rare (and slightly heartbreaking) moment of thematic whiplash—one that fans of both coasts are sure to notice. Whether the timing was intentional or just coincidental, the irony isn’t lost on anyone.

Avatar Is Coming to California

The Avatar-themed land coming to Disney California Adventure won’t be a copy-paste of what’s in Animal Kingdom. Instead, it’s being described as a completely new take—likely with aesthetics and experiences inspired by Avatar: The Way of Water.

While the Orlando version takes guests through the lush rainforests of Pandora, early concept art and reporting suggest this version may explore the coastal regions and oceans of the alien world.

At its heart will be a technologically advanced boat ride. Not a gentle float through a tunnel with singing animatronics—think something on the scale of Shanghai Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean. Cutting-edge projection mapping, animatronics, motion platforms, and synchronized ride vehicles could be in play here, designed to fully immerse riders in Pandora’s glowing bioluminescence and underwater terrain. In other words, this isn’t just another boat ride. It’s a new generation of themed storytelling, and it’s the crown jewel of this particular phase of DisneylandForward.

The Hollywood Backlot as we know it will be reimagined entirely. The fate of nearby attractions like Disney Junior Dance Party, Animation Academy, and even Stage 17 remains uncertain—but change is coming fast, and it’s likely to reach every corner of that land.

A Coco Ride at Pixar Pier… or Just Beyond It?

Over near Paradise Gardens Park, a long-rumored Coco attraction is finally confirmed. Slated to break ground this fall, it will be the first ride based on the Oscar-winning film and, according to Disney, a love letter to the rich visuals and musical soul of the story. Imagine something that blends the fluid movement of Haunted Mansion with the vibrancy of It’s a Small World, but with cutting-edge technology and deeply emotional storytelling. If done right, this could be a game-changer.

Here’s the interesting part: early Pixar Pier concept art from 2018 showed a boat ride in nearly the exact location the Coco ride is now expected to occupy. So while it may feel like a new addition, this idea has actually been simmering on the back burner for years. Whether this attraction uses water-based vehicles or a trackless dark ride format remains to be seen.

The bigger challenge? Space. Pixar Pier is already a high-traffic, high-frustration zone. The bottlenecks around Midway Mania, Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind, and the Incredicoaster launch make this part of the park one of the hardest to navigate—especially on busy days. Unless major infrastructure changes are made, this new attraction may add to the congestion before it relieves any of it.

The Parking Puzzle: A New Structure and a Changed Arrival Experience

With new lands come new logistics—and the east side of the Disneyland Resort is about to change dramatically. Disney has announced a 6,000-space parking structure to be built directly on top of the current Toy Story Parking Lot. But this isn’t just more asphalt. This new structure will include security screening, bus and rideshare hubs, and a pedestrian skybridge stretching across Harbor Boulevard to the main entrance plaza.

For guests who’ve parked in Toy Story in recent years, this is massive. No more waiting in a hot, slow-moving queue for buses. No more dodging traffic across busy streets. And—if it works as intended—a streamlined flow from car to park in under 10 minutes.

But it also means the esplanade will change. The entire arrival process may be restructured, not just to accommodate crowds, but to better connect the parks with new expansion zones under the DisneylandForward blueprint. Think more modernized security zones, digital ticketing options, and crowd-flow control baked into the infrastructure itself.

Meanwhile, Over in Avengers Campus…

While fans process the loss of Monstropolis, there’s a whole lot of construction noise coming from the Avengers Campus side of the park. Disney confirmed new attractions are on the way, including Avengers: Infinity Defense, a multiverse-based experience where guests team up with Marvel heroes to fight across timelines, and Stark Flight Lab, a rumored simulator-style thrill ride that could echo the movement of Flight of Passage.

Walkways between Avengers Campus and Cars Land are already being closed off to make room for expansion—and once the Avatar project breaks ground on the other side of the park, you can expect Disney California Adventure to feel like a living construction zone through at least 2026, and maybe beyond.

DisneylandForward Is About to Change Everything

These changes aren’t just isolated additions—they’re signals of a much bigger, longer game. DisneylandForward is Disney’s official effort to work with the city of Anaheim to update zoning laws and repurpose underutilized land within the resort’s current footprint. It’s been quietly gaining traction for years, but now we’re starting to see the pieces fall into place: new lands, new rides, a total rethinking of how guests enter and navigate the parks.

The future includes everything from hotels to shopping districts to nighttime entertainment—and while not all of it has been officially confirmed, the writing is on the wall: Disneyland Resort will never look the same again.

And while that’s exciting, it’s also a little overwhelming. For every bold new vision, something beloved must step aside. And sometimes that “something” is a ride you didn’t think you’d miss—until it’s gone.

So we say goodbye to Roz and her clipboard, to Boo in a monster costume, to doors swinging across conveyor belts. Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! may never have been the flashiest ride in the park, but it was a constant. A comfort. And it deserves more than to simply vanish into the construction dust.

We’re excited for what’s next. But we’ll miss what’s being left behind.

It’s finally here! Disney World has been teasing the debut of two new shows at Hollywood Studios for nearly a year, and today’s the day! And one of them is going on Lightning Lane MultiPass.

We’ve been eagerly awaiting Villains: Unfairly Ever After since it was first announced all the way back in September of last year. The 10-minute show features takes place in the Sunset theater, past the entrance to Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster.

Watch on as three classic characters attempt to explain their side of the story. The Evil Queen’s Magic Mirror kicks it off explaining that the villains have been struggling to escape. Cruella Deville, Captain Hook, and Maleficent then each take to the stage for a musical performance you won’t forget. And when it’s all over, you get the final say on who gets gets to stay.

The Little Mermaid Musical Adventure is a completely revised and updated version of Voyage of the Little Mermaid which previously ran for over 30 years before shutting down with the parks in 2020. It’s a musical stage retelling of the movie featuring both live performers and a cast of impressive puppeteers.

With the addition of cutting age projection technology, Disney is able to create an immersive stage environment that makes you feel as though you’re under the sea. What’s even more exciting is this show is being added to Lightening Lane, giving guests more tier 2 options to choose from.
